Digital coax cable, real world experiences?
I borrowed a Nordost Silver Shadow spidf cable from a friend recently. I used it to go between a usb to spidf converter and my dac. I thought it was ok sounding. After I tried the Nordost I had a idea for a cheap digital cable. Knowing that RG-6 c...
New Mag-Lev Turntable
ct0517, I was kind of wondering that myself. My guess is the magnetism would go right through things that are not magnetic.Geoff, vinyl has many flaws. If you do not want to sweat the details that is fine. I prefer not to add errors if I can help ...
New Mag-Lev Turntable
Ok thanks. I missed that. There is some sort of groove on the bottom of the platter. The feet look like they are cone shaped to fit that groove.
New Mag-Lev Turntable
On that same track, in order to align the cartridge correctly you would need to put blocks under the platter to raise it to the same height as when it is spinning. How would you accurately place the platter at the same place it spins when floating...
New Mag-Lev Turntable
Geoff, that is true but any extra motion is not ideal. Since there is no spindle how accurately does it spin in one location? Does the platter always align to the same spot? If not this could change the pivot to spindle difference each time. When ...
New Mag-Lev Turntable
ct0517, Yes tolerances are very important. The MagLev table in question is highly unlikely to have good tolerances at it's price point. Also highly unlikely to out perform other turntables at the same price point. All depends on how accurately the...
New Mag-Lev Turntable
I agree with what Ralph says above. Mag-Lev under the entire turntable may have some merit. It would just act like a simple spring though. A Minus K or a piezo electric table base would probably work better. You would never see a vinyl cutting mach...

Hi astro58go. Yes all those points you brought up make a difference. It all effects the dampening of vibrations in the record you are playing. Dampen too much, and you loose information. Dampen too little, and you get extra info that was not origi...
New Mag-Lev Turntable
Highly sceptical of this table. Mag Lev with no points of contact is very difficult to do. Not sure how it could be done at all, especially for so little money. If it can be done, it would require powerful magnets that I would not want anywhere nea...

I find it can be hit and miss with TT mats. I have quite a few different ones. I do not like felt or rubber mats at all. I’ve settled down on a few different hard material mats because it depends on the cartridge I’m using at the time. I find that...
Vandersteen 7 amps?
I have heard the 7’s sound excellent with Ayre MRX mono’s at a dealer some time ago. They should have enough power. Quite spendy though. Personally have not liked any Vandy/ Arc combo I’ve heard in the past. Have liked Vandy/ Aesthetix pairings th...
How much difference if the tonearm is mounted 5mm
Assuming you can mount the arm where ever you want. With a Feickert protractor (own one myself) you can just mount the arm where you end up with the cartridge in the middle of the head shell slots, and still get the stylus in the middle of the cro...
How much difference if the tonearm is mounted 5mm
Calvin, thanks for the clarification. It sounds like you are correct about the arm being off spec. The only other logical conclusion is that the Feickert protractor is off spec. If the Feickert works fine on other arms then that would rule it out ...
How much difference if the tonearm is mounted 5mm
If you are mounting the new arm in the stock VPI hole then I doubt it will work. The pivot to spindle distance for a JMW-9 is 223 mm. Which is 9 mm longer than your new arm. That's very unlikely to work.
How much difference if the tonearm is mounted 5mm
As Griffithds said it will depend if you have enough room in the slots of the head shell to compensate for the distance lost. Also if you use an arc protractor it will need to be one that is for use at the same pivot to spindle distance as you hav...
