Thoughts on the Linn LP12 turntable
We sold them when they were new in the 1970's.  They were VERY fussy and bouncy and took forever to set up.  Not BAD, mind you, in sound, but when Technics came out with direct drive, well, some customers still liked their 12's, but many of my peo...
McIntosh Group purchased by PE firm
@bigtex22  Sorry about that.  I guess it would be better to have posted: Its 1960.  Let's go listen to a Mc + Klipschorn system.  Maybe they will play that thing where the train whistle goes from one speaker to the other...you know, STEREO. Bett...
Need suggestions: High pitched female singers
Linda Ronstadt has one of the best overall female voices ever. She can do EVERY kind of music, from rock and traditional American to Broadway to her heritage Mexican. Find a better and more versatile voice if you can. Oh, and unlike many "singer...
McIntosh Group purchased by PE firm
@jerryg123 You interpret stuff interestingly, but no surprise. Mc has been 3rd rate forever and will remain so. BUT, it is PRETTY! Rich people LOVE IT. Anyway, PE is in business to make cash, which, from what I can tell these days, is the ONLY r...
Top 10 vintage cassette decks
All Nak decks broke but were able to be fixed. The consensus "best" was the Dragon. Three heads, azimuth alignment are the keys to a good deck. You can buy them used but you may have to have it serviced. Once it is working as intended, it was con...
Audio Research, AYON and Primaluna tube amplifiers.
While NO company has 100% great products, yet over the years (1970-2022) they have been in business, ARC has had more "wins" than most companies have had ever. Interesting to see that their first break-through pre-amp from mid-1970’s (SP-3A1) STI...
Integrated tube amp with phono pre - need recco
I am not sure I would trust a new integrated tube amp that cost less than $1000.  Tubes themselves are pretty expensive, not to mention quality boards and components.  Maybe used, but even then... But, GOOD LUCK!
Is Mark Levinson still considered up there with the best of the best?
FULL DISCLOSURE: My former dealership made some of the solid oak stands for the Levinson HQD system: https://www.stereophile.com/content/mark-levinson-hqd-loudspeaker-system   We also made some huge cabs for the Hartley 24" woofers th...
What type of wire for dedicated 20A AC lines?
@jea48  Look, I don't know how old any of poster's houses are or if they are wired with cloth-covered wire or built in 1930 or whatever, and I am sure there are reasons that exist for some upgrades, etc. in some situations.  Also, if you think ru...
What type of wire for dedicated 20A AC lines?
Thanks for all the entertainment, guys. Now, I will go read one of those "cable" threads.   This stuff is a laugh riot. Cheers!
Soundstage and image height, does it exist?
Gee, I don't know.  BUT, what I do know is that when Jim Winey decided to make Magnepan speakers 6' high, the listener was treated to a source that more closely mimicked the experience of being at a live concert.  The "sound stage" of a concert is...
Why Is Hi Fi Gear So Darn Expensive?
Depends.  With a company I know about, the face plates were impossible to get made properly without spending WAY more than the owner wanted.  The internal components were picked BY HAND from boxes of the "TOP 5%" of the manufacturer's output--alre...
What's the heaviest speaker you've ever owned? What's the tallest?
Funny how box speaker makers now stack them to be very tall. Wonder where they got THAT idea (Magnepan)? So interesting to see this "evolution" happen... I guess Mr. Winey was on to something after all...
For classical music lovers best amp for large orchestral forces?
@ghdprentice is totally correct.  TRY it if you do not believe us. Regarding your box speakers, at the same time, ask your dealer to substitute a pair of Magnepan speakers for these and see if the orchestra does not move into your room with you. ...
Concerning high end audio names in new cars
Car audio is pretty complicated.  Licensing home audio companies to put their names on car audio systems is kind of a joke.  I am sure the companies try to do whatever they can to help out, but no one gets into their car to listen critically to mu...
