Low-sensitivity speakers — What's special about them?
Thanks for linked article, @alexberger. In real-world scenarios with mostly passively configured, inefficient speakers - certainly approaching to some extent live acoustic (or amplified) levels - Thermal Distortion is an inescapable factor. @lonem...
Low-sensitivity speakers — What's special about them?
@atmasphere -- Al was a really nice guy. I miss having him here. Indeed - a very knowledgeable guy, well-spoken and always with a balanced and to-the-point approach. .. A 'high sensitivity speaker' is really going to be more like 96dB at the low...
Low-sensitivity speakers — What's special about them?
@gdnrbob Seeing Almarg's post at the front of this thread brings back fond memories. I hope heaven has a great sound system for him to listen to.Bob I wasn't aware of poster @almarg having passed. Sorry to learn of this.
A friend told me JBL DD67000 is actually very bad speaker, is it true?
If not the DD67000's - which are really rather much more sonically capable and fleshed out than their smaller siblings, incl. the M2's to my ears - I'd go with actively driven Meyer Sound pro series speakers (Acheron/Studio) and add some big, high...
SET on JBL Everests - Mouse breeding an elephant?
The real treat it seems would be running the DD67000’s actively - have you considered that?https://positive-feedback.com/interviews/greg-timbers-jbl/
SET on JBL Everests - Mouse breeding an elephant?
Don’t know whether named amps have variable gain (or how they otherwise match here as a fixed value), but you could use the SET(‘s) for the HF/MF horns and the bridged 275’s for the 15” units? Or else I imagine a pair of stand-alone SET’s would do...
Pulled from old theater
@doyle3433 -- Hello all, last week I lugged home items from a long retired theater. Former adult theater, that was once a first run theater.. but I digress. Essentially a big horn on top and a 15" driver mounted in a folded cabinet. Altec crossov...
Bass sensation like a loud car system in home?
@mijostyn -- I would feel free in saying the vast majority of us do not have the room for subwoofer horns. Maybe so. And yet; if you have the allocated space anyway it seems to me the sheer will to do it is the predominant factor, unless the ho...
Bass sensation like a loud car system in home?
@tony1954 - My only question would be, why?Unless I am watching a battle scene from Avatar or Midway, the last thing I want is bass that is disproportional to the way it was recorded. I believe I understand what the OP is after, that "inside your...
Bass sensation like a loud car system in home?
@mijostyn -- You do not need to resort to huge drivers to get the best bass. They take up way too much room when you factor in the enclosures they require.Today’s subwoofers are way more powerful than drivers of old. Their Xmax is much higher, up ...
Stuck at home? Make a speaker or something for goodness sake!
Using actively configured speakers with digital cross-overs and setting this up is my kind of “DIY,” and being that my pro cinema speakers are modular, i.e.: they can be used with different midrange/HF horns on top, it’s another variable to be exp...
Paper Cones in HiFi?
@larryi -- Scanspeak makes some fairly expensive paper coned woofers. I don't think they think that paper is crap. A local dealer that builds its own custom speakers just finished a pair that utilizes 15" paper coned drivers from Scanspeak. Th...
Bass sensation like a loud car system in home?
As long as you live in an apartment, and this is an assumption on my part, what you ask for is a pipe dream. If you can " feel" the bass, your neighbor can too.Move into a house ...+1@yukispier -- Actually I am just trying to be a courteous home o...
Paper Cones in HiFi?
I prefer high efficiency 15" woofers with paper cones (most if not all of this segment of drivers use paper cones anyway), preferably crossed not much higher than in the 500Hz vicinity - horn-loaded if possible or in duals (per channel) as direct ...
Paper Cones in HiFi?
@gs5556 -- Not true at all. "Paper" tends to denote taking the cheap way out but is in fact a complicated mess of fibers, polymers, resins etc., engineered for light weight (has to react quickly), high rigidity (prevents deformation) and longevit...
