Manufacturers with great customer service
Hagerman Labs. I had a hum issue while using my Cornet III phonostage. My email to customer service was the start of a 10 message thread with Jim Hagerman himself. He was very friendly and helpful. He stayed with me until we solved my problem, whi...
Turntable Causes Speaker Cones To Excessively Move Rapidly
The Ortofon has a compliance of 22 compared with 22.5 for the Shure. The resonant frequency in a 22g tonearm is 6 Hz. Anything less than 8 can give the unwanted resonance. you may have a mismatch.   look for a cartridge with a dynamic compliance...
Turntable Causes Speaker Cones To Excessively Move Rapidly
Yogiboy appropriately mentioned tonearm / cartridge mismatch as the most likely culprit. I agree. Your response assumes the vendor would not sell you a mismatched combination, but that may not be true. Look up the effective mass of your tonearm a...
Turntable Hum Issue.
I had a similar issue. I corresponded with Jim Hagerman, who made my phono stage. He has a very systematic approach summed up in his paper www.hagtech.com/pdf/eliminatingnoise.pdf. His approach solved my problem. All the best.
SHARE YOUR SACDs THAT SOUND FANTASTIC!!
Fairytales by Radka Toneff and Steve Dobrogosz is stellar. It is a simple singer + piano performance done in a room with fascinating acoustics. It was recorded in 1982 and issued on LP and then CD. In 2017 Bob Stuart remastered it to SACD in a hyb...
ISO: Carver HR Series and Klipsch KG3 or KG4
Loki485, I just now read your post. I happen to have a CT-17 and a TFM25. One owner (me). Both have factory boxes, factory styrofoam, remote, manuals and rack handles. I had the TFM 25 recapped and re-biased at Nelion Audio in 2019. The units hav...
Next upgrade to an entry-level system?
Echoing (sorry) Larsman's point, setup makes a huge difference. A good way to approach the task is with guidance. Jim Smith is the guru of audio expo setups. He installs and voices esoteric equipment playing in awful rooms, and his reputation for ...
Buzzing sound emanating from my speakers when receiver is set to 'phono'
Jim Hagerman, who makes phono preamps, has this article on eliminating noise in vinyl playback systems: https://www.hagtech.com/pdf/eliminatingnoise.pdf
Converting Vinyl to Digital
Some readers might appreciate an observation about the budget-friendly side of A to D. Years ago I bought a Behringer U-Control UCA222 convertor. It cost less than $70. Reliability is perfect so far, and the quality of the recordings it makes are ...
Suggestions for a holographic preamp?
I know you are looking for something different than this, but I had to throw it out there just because.  I have a 1992 Carver CT-17 preamp tuner with a sonic holography circuit. Bob Carver apparently invented an effect that he thought sounds bette...
OT: Espresso machines
I can echo the recommendation for Jura super automatic machines.  Mine is 9 years old.  It makes pretty good espresso and associated drinks. My habit is to drink 6 or so cups a morning. When I finally replaced a part a year ago, it had made over 1...
