CD Recorder that has decent sound?
Thanks for the clarification Ramstl - hey, I don't always get the minutae straight either. It's the big picture that counts! The Yamaha is a little too rich for my blood. The Sony, at $600, would allow keeping the Linn for D-->D recording as we...
CD Recorder that has decent sound?
I was able to find only a Sony 'pro model' CDR-W33 on the web site. It has the SBM technology, and is carried in a local establishment for $599. They have a 14 day return policy, so I was considering giving it a go. Also saw the Yamaha on their si...
Turntable for Rega RB300 Arm
N.B. - when you get the upgrade 'itch,' take a look at the Origin Live upgrades for Rega tables/arms. If I didn't have my LP-12, I'd probably get a P-25 and 'mod' it into a killer table! Enjoy! -John
Soul Recommendations
Otis Redding - Otis Blue (O.R. sings soul) is an absolute MUST HAVE! It's in glorious MONO and can be found on German-pressed LP with GREAT sonics. The standard-issue CD (remaster) is actually pretty good as well (bought it for a friend). The cool...
Jazz Recommendations
Here are a few of my faves: 1) Oscar Peterson Trio - West Side Story 2) Bill Evans - At Montreux 3) Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage 4) Gil Evans - Out of the Cool 5) Kenny Burrell - Guitar Forms 6) Cannonball Adderly w/ Miles Davis - Somethin' Else...
CD-R, CD-RW, SCMS??? Need Advice!
Thanks Craig, for your advice here and on the other thread. I plan to start auditioning a few different players soon. -John
ABBEY ROAD TAPE HISS
In the F.W.I.W. category, and in deference to the original question, here goes: In listening to the three copies I currently have on hand I found a significant dimunition in the audibility of tape hiss in going from the least to the most expensive...
Good stand-alone phono preamp?
A real sleeper is the Michell Delphini. FWIW, Fremer chose the BASIC model as his 'second favorite' out of a half-dozen or so phono stages in a recent Stereophile. And the basic is NOTHING compared to the upgrade unit with highly regulated power s...
Need Cartridge Recommendation
I infer from your expressed 'candidates' that you're considering low-medium output coils. Benz has a good synergy with the LP-12, and even the LO.4 is a great cartridge for the money. Another line to consider is Allaerts, reportedly the preferred ...
Cart. for AR turntable
Other contenders likely to be compatible with the AR would include Denon DL-110 or 160, Clearaudio aurum alpha or beta, or perhaps one of the lower-priced Dynavectors. I've been 'hearing' good things about those in particular (10X4 mk II), but not...
Cart. for AR turntable
I used a Blue Point (solid bodied) on my AR after refurbishing and adding the VPI med mass arm, and the sound was too strident ('hard') for my tastes. Can't recommend it. Ended up using an AT440ML with acceptable results at the price point. Appare...
Felt mat or AR Turntable
I think ear wax remover runs about 88 cents as well! Give different mats a try, and trust your OWN ears. All I can say is that my AR became more detailed, more neutral. Same but more of it with the Linn.
Felt mat or AR Turntable
Ringmat does make a difference (improvement) on the AR, and also the Linn. Personal preference as to whether it is a cost effective upgrade or not. Fremer's remarks were in regard to glass-plattered tables such as the Rega.
Grille Rattle.....HELP!!
Most speakers sound better with the grilles OFF (increased clarity/imaging). If this is possible aesthetically, and you don't have small children who like to poke their little fingers into speakers, I'd recommend it.
what is everybody listening to right now
Richard Thompson 'Mock Tudor' on Bong Load heavy vinyl (also available on CD I'm sure), can't recommend this one highly enough. Also Elliott Smith 'Figure 8' also on Bong Load. More brilliance from this guy (IMHO).
