Is it really worth it to get a phono stage over $10k
I personally think you are better off sticking with what you have. Using an outboard phono preamp is asking for more noise. You have more connections, redundant power supplies and metal. If John Curl designed your circuits you are indeed blessed. ...
Vinyl / High qual analog tape / High-res digital -- One of these is not like the other
I think Mike just had a mine burp but cleeds is correct cassettes are 1/8"There were auto reversing cassette decks but alignment certainly would have been a problem in rather inexpensive transports. I believe it was even a problem in decks that we...
A challenge to all turntable manufacturers
jperry, I suppose you could read it that way but I meant technical sophistication.MikeL , I do believe that is a subjective opinion. The techies would say you are listening to distortion that you and many others find pleasing. I listen to records ...
Should people who can't solder, build or test their speakers be considered audiophiles?
Duke, you must live in a house full of women.
Basic anti vibration? Cones vs pods? Is there "good enough solution"?
geoffkait, it is more stable to hang your house from springs than to sit it on springs. If the houses center of gravity is not right in the center of the situation it will bobble to one side or another making everyone inside seasick. David Fletche...
Output test on amp
Yes, the correct way to do it would be with a signal generator and an oscilloscope. I believe this would be an unusual failure mode for an amplifier but hey, it is a strange world out there.  I see no reason why imhififan's method would not work.
A challenge to all turntable manufacturers
The DS system offers no significant  benefit that I can see. You still have a stylus tracing the groove. Tracing the groove is the hardest part not the conversion to an electrical signal. The DS uses modulation of LED lighting and a standard picku...
Direct Drive vs. Idler Drive vs. Belt drive
Passive Flywheel = more mechanical noise. It is the same reason manufacturers interested in the highest fidelity shied away from changers and idler wheel designs.
Should people with no turntable or reel to reel be considered audiophiles?

A 15 ips copy of a master tape is an incredible thing to hear. I do not think any turntable could match it.
Direct Drive vs. Idler Drive vs. Belt drive
By today's standard it is not so hot but back then not bad at all. An SME arm cost twice as much as the whole turntable! If you put anti skating on it along with a real horizontal bearing it would be quite competitive. There are aspects of the XA t...
Azimuth 2020
First of all cleeds I am not a him, I am a her. It seems there might be a problem with definitions here. With any offset arm changing the VTA will ever so slightly change the azimuth. Within a reasonable setting for VTA the change is trivial but i...
I'm here for the enthusiasts, not the snobbery
My husband wants a GT4 but there is a long waiting list. Maybe the next version.
Seasoning your sound with powercords
Millercarbon, I'm speechless again. I've been watching for a while to get the flavor of it.  I never talk about my system nor do I photograph it.  What I say has to stand on it's own irregardless of my own set up.
70’s rock pressings. Witch equipment deserve?
chakster, There were major differences in quality between the genres. Motown made the worse pressings ever. Rock and Jazz are hit and miss. Classical was handily the best.  Fortunately, those us with turntables have become a lot more discriminatin...
