Quad 2805 reliablity? Distance from wall needed?
The radiated sound from the rear of the speaker will bounce off the rear wall and reach your ears after the sound from the front of the speaker. If the time lag between front and rear radiations is short (because the speaker is near the rear wall)...
rockport altair any informed opinions?
I don't know where you live. But if practical, you might consider a vacation trip to mid-coast Maine. You could listen to all the Rockport speakers at the Rockport factory in Rockport, Maine, a pretty town between the larger, nearby cities of Rock...
ARC REF 3 or MBL 5011 - what is better buy?
I have owned and appreciated the MBL 5011. It is a very fine preamp, and close to the flagship 6010D in sound quality, though not as resolving. I eventually traded it in for two reasons: it lacks a balance control and its output impedance of 100 o...
XLR Pin Vocabulary
Atmasphere, both my preamp and amp have pin one as the ground. But pin 2 on the preamp is non-inverting and pin 3 inverting, while my amp has the reverse configuration (pin 2 -, pin 3 +). Since the amp is designed to be fully balanced, doesn't the...
One speaker louder
One possibility is room acoustics relative to the placement of the speakers and your listening position. Window glass, differences in furniture upholstry, wall hangings, rugs, etc. can affect sound.
Review: Krell EVO 402/Evo202 Amplifier
How well does the EVO 202 mate with a variety of non-Krell solid state amplifiers? One would expect synergy between the EVO 202 and the 402 (and other EVO amps). But what about high-end non-Krell amps (and especially those with low input impedance)?
class d
Are there any Class D preamps? If not, are there likely to be any in the near future?
SS Preamp with Balance Control
Ckoffend, Thanks for an account of your experiences and some suggestions. My speakers are toed in a bit, and I'm disinclined to move them. Their large spikes have penetrated the Chinese rug that they are on. My wife has either not noticed or has c...
SS Preamp with Balance Control
I should have added that whatever preamp I get will have to partner well with my amp, a Burmester 911 Mk3. The Burmester has a low input impedance, which affects choice of a preamp. I'm presently using an MBL 5011, and have thought of either a Bur...
YG Acoustics add in Stereophile
I have a pair of Anat Ref II Studios. I am now running them with a Burmester 911 Mk 3 amplifier, connected in balanced mode by a Burmester silver XLR cable to an MBL 5011. The sound is quite good, but being a hobbyist I'm always looking for improv...
YG Acoustics add in Stereophile
I own a pair of YG Anat Reference II Studios, and I have never experienced the "bottoming out" mentioned by Atmasphere and Khrys. The Anats have two mid-woofers per side, whereas the Kipods have one per side. YG literature maintains that the Kipod...
Preamps with two pairs of balanced outs?
MBL 5011.
Quad ESL or Soundlab?
I have no experience of the 2805s. But I had Quad ESL-63s for several years. I liked them except for one thing -- the very narrow "sweet spot." Were someone to buy those speakers, I would advise that person to sign up for a Yoga class at the same ...
YG Acoustic Kipods
Vjayh, It occurs to me that I may not have worded my reply to you as clearly as I might. When I talk about "one interconnect per channel from each speaker," I am talking about the subwoofer drivers. You need one interconnect cable for each subwoof...
YG Acoustic Kipods
Vjayh, I have Anat Studio Reference II speakers. I run one interconnect per channel from each speaker to the Pre-out of my integrated VAC amplifier. It happens that I am using RCA terminations, but the subwoofer modules of the Anats will accept ei...
