Tube newbie, Audio Research questions?
ARC generally has a less "tubey" sound than most other tube gear, meaning less inherent "warmth" to the sound, instead a more "neutral" balance. I personally find this a good thing, but others don't. The classic example is CJ vs ARC, totally diffe...
Time coherence - how important and what speakers?
Cdc, NSM is blowing smoke up your ... There is no way on heaven or earth that the speaker shown in your link is time coherent. As I posted early on in this thread, very few speakers are actually time coherent, and I've never ever seen one with dri...
cd player with high output voltage,,under 1k?
There is a Wadia 830 on Ebay right now for just over $1K, which has built-in volume control and selectable output voltage up to 4V. I don't know anything about the seller. There is nothing in this price range that can touch an 830, so IMHO it is w...
Madrigal is Closed
I think this is nothing more than a result of their own success and their own corporate direction. A very popular and well-respected brand with very high build quality (although I personally never cared much for their sound), bought and sold and m...
General opinion about ADCOM amplifiers
I think they are good value for the money and relatively reliable. But I would suggest looking into used Brystons if your budget will allow. They are better, sonically and especially build quality.
SPeakers 90% of your sound
You can safely say that speakers display more variation in sound character from one brand/type to the next than any other component. It could thus be argued that they affect the sound of the system more than any other. This is not, however, the sa...
DH labs q-10?
Get the Q10, you'll be glad you did.
Balanced Power
To try to clear up the confusion here:Normal house service is wired 240v balanced, meaning two 120v legs in opposite phase plus a neutral wire. The two 120v legs alternate in the panel from one breaker slot to the next in a vertical direction, on ...
Balanced Power
Stehno, there are two ways to get there: One, take your house's 240v supply and run it through a stepdown transformer wound 2:1 (240v to 120v). Or two, just pass one of the 120's through an isolation transformer (wound 1:1 with a center tap for gr...
Balanced Power
I believe that Exactpower makes a unit that does this, for around $1k. You can't get there just by simple wiring changes to your existing house wiring; as stated above, you need an isolation transformer and they are not cheap.
Do you keep your amps and preamps on all the time
I keep 'em on all the time except bad weather or trips, but I run SS with relatively low idle consumption. Almost all SS will have no problem being on 24/7 if you don't mind paying the power bill. Tubes are a different matter altogether; running 2...
Do tube dampers really work?
Yes, I know that tapping tubes is a much more severe G load than typical air loads can impart. However, it is significantly closer in magnitude to conceivable chassis-borne vibrations. (Have you ever put your hand on your preamp's chassis while lo...
CDP - Wadia 830/Cary 303/Ayre CX7
Both Wadia and Ayre are great choices and you can't go wrong with either one. Both are very neutral, musical, detailed, and dynamic. The Cary will be more euphonic (warm, smooth) and less "neutral" than either of them, depends on whether you like ...
Do tube dampers really work?
Having just been told in no uncertain terms by several other Audiogoners (in another recent thread) that tube microphonics have been a non-issue since the 1940's, I hardly dare to raise my head here. But I can't resist. Lessee, you've a bunch of h...
Weird ring/thump noise when I hit my speaker cable
Marakanetz, have you ever actually TRIED IT? Not just on one particular tube, but on many different ones? I'm not claiming that they all ring like a bell, only that they do in fact have SOME microphony and that it varies a lot depending on the typ...
