Is rack between speakers always less than ideal?
I agree with Schipo: If the rack is an open-air design, I really don’t see a major problem. After it was installed, I experimented with several different locations for my SRA Craz-4 rack. I finally decided on between the speakers and behind them b...
Marantz SC-7S2 solid state preamp- how good is it?
I’ve heard it under showroom conditions with the 9 monoblocks, and the sound was sublime. The dealer plugged in an Ayre preamp—forget the model—for the Marantz, and the sound suddenly became much more “hifi-ish,” for lack of a better word. Just no...
Unhappy with tubes so which transistor amp?
Had the Karan integrated for a while, and it was very nice, but then I went the separates route, so I sold it. Have good memories of it, though. Did most things very well indeed. I think part of the company's problem is that it comes from a part o...
Unhappy with tubes so which transistor amp?
They run way under the radar here in the U.S., but you should definitely check out Coda. They make some of the best transistor amps available, IMO. They simply excel at everything. Neutral, smooth, dynamic as all get-out, and able to drive most an...
SA11 S2 SACD player. I'm listening to more CDs
I may be in the distinct minority here, but I generally prefer the sound of good digital to analog. And, plus, digital has come a loooong way since the mid-‘80s. With my modded SA-7S1 and modded Oppo BDP-83SE, I have absolutely no desire to go bac...
Importance of Damping Factor and Current for amps
I'm going to find out for sure on Saturday, as I’m going to compare my Coda S12.5 to a pair Pass Aleph monoblocks. The Coda has far more power (125 watts vs. 30) and a very high damping factor, so we’ll see if it controls the bass better on my fri...
Nice pop lp' from the 70's
Good one. Gotta remember to spin "Driver's Seat" today!I agree: very well-constructed songs.
Grammys for 2010, so far...
All three are excellent choices, though I don't think "Mojo" is as deserving as "The List" or "Midnight Souvenirs." It's not one of my favorite Petty albums.
Definitive Technology Mythos STS floorstanders
I really don’t understand many people’s dismissal of DefTech speakers as merely “home theater” speakers. In my second system, which is a combination music/HT system, my STSs function perfectly. I directly compared them to Vandersteen 3As and Von S...
Audiophile Addiction
I had a ~150k system that I sold because I had lost complete sight of the music. Audio was a miserable chore, and, as a result, the system ultimately had to go. I'm completely content listening to my infinitely cheaper second rig while I cobble to...
B&W 804S vs. Def Tech ST
I've heard both, and I ultimately went with the Def Tech STS's. They're much more of an all-purpose speaker, which I need, as I'm running a combination music/HT second system. Never very impressed with B&Ws in general.
Coda csx
"They have zero dealers in the US."That's true. They sell direct. That's how I got mine.
Coda csx
That’s a good deal. Personally, I’m a huge fan of Coda products. They don’t get much play here in the States, but that’s mainly because they don’t advertise here. They had some bad luck with less-than-ethical reviewers at some of the popular audio...
New reissue of Exile on Main Street
Despite being made by a bunch of Englishmen, “Exile” is one of the best slices of Americana ever put down on wax, IMO. It was truly a masterpiece and—despite the group’s best efforts—an impossible act to follow. As has been stated in this thread, o...
New reissue of Exile on Main Street
"Exile" wasn't issued on SACD—just the Stones' pre–“Sticky Fingers” ABKO catalog.
