XLR or single ended cables and why?
In my mind, I think of it this way. First: Do you need to deal with very long runs (say greater than 30 feet, and yes, I did just pull that number out of the air ;) between source and pre or between pre and amp? If so, stick with XLR. If not, go w...
Which 5.1 ch Pre?
While I haven't heard the others you mention (though I have heard good things about the Map1), I've been nothing but pleased with my Audio Refinement Pre-5. The closest thing I've ever had to a complaint with it has nothing to do with sound qualit...
Where to position speakers in new apartment
What Kal said. Put the speakers ~4 feet in front of the windows (cover windows with heavy-ish drapes), ~3.5 feet from each side wall and sit where your head is ~14 feet from the window wall. That should give you a great starting point, especially ...
Beware Sony CDs on your PCs
No surprise...Sony has no conscience and never has. If you need proof of that, count up how many artists Sony destroyed (and you will never get to hear) by buying out smaller labels and discarding everyone except the single artist they were after ...
If it's snowing, I'm going
Too bad I didn't find this until today :( I didn't have anything worth doing going on this weekend and might have gone for the helluvit.
If it's snowing, I'm going
Snofun: I've been going up to Whistler every year for the last 9 or 10, so I know exactly what you mean about hoping I can see something. ; ) Up there it seems to either be whiteout or awesome-out. Grand views, if there are any at all. Late Decemb...
If it's snowing, I'm going
This year's trip to Whistler-Blackcomb is already booked, so, if anyone sees a yellow and black blur hurtling out of 7th Heaven a week before Christmas...it'll probably be me.Otherwise I'll be in VT, NY, or stuck skiing the crap they call slopes h...
Subwoofer has a Hum
"I have all dedacated circuits for my gear."And therein lies your problem. Plug everything into one circuit and be amazed when the hum suddenly disappears. Try it and let us know. I'd be very, very surprised if that didn't solve your problem.

nice turntable that plays 78s
I just went down this road while looking for a gift for my father. He has many, many old 78s that he hasn't heard in years as well as a fair number of LPs. This was my choice:http://www.esotericsound.com/turntable.htmI can't make any claims about ...
What's the funniest song you ever heard?
He did, indeed! It's on several of his compilation albums from numerous live recordings but (I believe) was first recorded on the album called "Live and Kickin'". As far as downloading goes, 5 of his funniest songs can be downloaded here:http://ww...
See it frequently: What exactly is a "troll"?
Nice one, Blkadr! That one covers almost all the troll bases!
HDCD question.....
I don't have too many HDCDs, but the ones I do have sound considerably better with greatly expanded soundstage.

Upgrade question.
Bottom line, I guess, is that you aren't likely to be disappointed with either choice. The 35Hz spec is probably a little optimistic for both sets, but that is typical of almost all manufacturers. Mine checked in at -3db at 40Hz in my room. Still,...
