I got lucky and found a Chicago shop (140 miles away) that'd service it..  Apparently a resistor failed & shorted other things (better report later) - about $2,000 worth of parts & labor.
MLAS 436 shipping carton?
The road trip advice makes sense.  I might be in luck, for Milwaukee is a 90 minute drive, Chicago is a 3 hour drive, and my daughter lives in the Twin Cities (~4 hours away).  The "might be in luck" depends on the results of  the search, now on f...

An addendum:  one of the pair now persists in finding a "mains fault", after behaving very nicely for 2 years.  Changing to a different circuit?  Same problem. So I see that the nearest authorized repair can be gotten in Austin,Texas or Syracuse,...

I am (was) Mendota Research, and we had worked with John Curl briefly when we were getting off the ground.  John and his then-girlfriend were extremely helpful in introducing us around at CES.  TAS liked the two versions of prototypes (one hand-ma...
breuer 5c tonearm
I bought my Breuer in 1978 or thereabouts, corresponded with Herr Breuer, and  acquired the 5C fluid damper (thus far unused) directly from him.  After some carpentry was done on my SP-10 (a macassar ebony block to fill the opening where the previ...
Seeking shipping cartons
I called Levinson, to see if they'd sell me shipping cartons, after a respondent suggested I do so.  They have none. Discontinued products do not interest them at all. That came as a surprise, but there it is. :-(
DIFFICULT PROBLEM WITH A REPAIR SERVICE-
I sent my Sony WW-D6C off to Sam Palermo four + (count 'em: 4.5) years ago.  I bugged him once each year, just inquiring as to status.  He finally claimed to have opened mine up and found previous 'work' that was wrong.  As I have never opened min...

I have a pair of 436 driving 'elderly B&W DM6 speakers.  The only finickiness I have encountered is they really like having sources (seen through the MLAS 3236S preamp) turned on when selected.  When they're not, the nearest amp 'thinks' there...
Review: Dynavector KARAT 23 R Cartridge
I bought a 23R new waaay back, and it lives in a very low-mass Breuer 5A arm.  It still sounds pretty much as I recall it (though I confess I listen to more CDs than I do vinyl nowadays, for very few modern bluesmen record on vinyl).  I forget wha...
breuer 5c tonearm
I have a 5A (which is the arm) and the 5C (which is the fluid damping 'accessory'). As the plinth of my SP-10 is too high to allow the installation of the 5C, it still sits in its box. I have complete literature from Breuer (with whom I corres...
B&W DM6, any good compared to speakers today?
I've got a pair, bought new in 1978. They've had quite a few different electronics bits feeding music to them over the past 37 year. I guess I might contemplate replacing them with a set of big Magneplanars, but they lack the necessary Wife Approv...
anyone happy with Breuer tonearm? experiences?
I've had a 5b for about 34 years. When I installed it, I had a record playing while I telephoned my then-girlfriend (wife now for going on 33 years). She interrupted to ask if I'd gotten a new cartridge. I asked why (she knew the recording: Ditter...
B&W DM6 speakers
I have a pair that I've owned since 1978-79. The only things I'd swap 'em for would be a pair of 'stats. But they'd have difficulty getting admitted to a room that others use.Once I tried an electronic x-over and a set of subs I built from JBL 15-...
Have you ever deceived your wife-audio purchase
Never deceived the wife (never had to - we have two separate economies, share joint expenses), but I have a Breuer story: I was in law school, read about one, found it in a SF shop, 3,000 miles away. The shop had two locals competing for it, sold ...
Wisconsin - Anyone interested?
Tap beer for me, please. I'm a Union member, BTW, and can buy.-Gene Rankin
