man do I miss Tower records and
Here is Los Angeles we still have SecondSpin, CD Trader (both on Ventura Blvd) and the awesome Amoeba records. But I do miss the 98% of CD/LP stores that are gone. But we have to get over it and move on. The old days ain't coming back. Record labe...
Apple TV
I've been using it with an outboard DAC for over a year and enjoy it a lot - where else can you find such a versatile transport/media server for only $200?The thing is very fun and easy to use. I've spent spent several months ripping a thousand mo...
The Tubes
Love the tubes for years. How about the awesome guitar solo on "Talk to ya Later" by Steve Lukather of Toto fame...? not too mention singers "Fee Waybill" - and the hot "Re Styles" ... production by Todd Rundgren.... very zappa-like satire and soc...
Music for toddlers and parents?
"They Might Be Giants" has long been my son's favorite band - I loved them since I was in college - now they are making kids music discs in addition to "regular" stuff. Even before they were doing kids records they were doing quirky, funny "pseudo...
How Do You Organize Your Music?
Weird Experiment: Currently my stuff is organized by record label, makes sense if your stuff is mostly jazz or classical:ECM, bluenote, verve, reprise, DG, London, etc... I used to work at a record store where the classical was arranged by label a...
Ugliest Speakers???
All of them - according to my wife.
James Randi vs. Anjou Pear - once and for all
Open challenge? Not. Sounds like more of a media stunt than a real challenge:"This offer is not open to any and all persons. Before being considered as an applicant, the person applying must satisfy two conditions: First, he/she must have a “media...
Notes on Todd Rundgren Show
Glad to hear you had a great Todd show. I'm also a Todd fan - saw him only once - 2 years ago in LA. Show was very bizarre - started out with this anti-religeous rant "Facist Christ" - he was dressed like the pope and all his band was wearing diff...
Jazz guys: Bebop, Hard Bop etc.
Hey that's cool - sounds like we like a lot of the same stuff. I was just trying to add a little humor (very little). Can someone really define a genre in words - withOUT just listing a bunch of players? I think at best you'll settle for is "perio...
Jazz guys: Bebop, Hard Bop etc.
Let's see... in addition to the Bebop there's the A-bop, C-bop, D-bop and re-bop... Now that Starbucks sells music they have the half-caf grande latte-bop... but seriously folks - most of the players you've mentioned would cringe at any attempts t...
Cheap DIY FM Antenna
CMk - I would just build it with speaker wire - the thing about the 300 ohm cable is that the wires are separated by about a half inch - not sure what this does - but you could simulate this by separating but holding them at half inch with duct ta...
Cheap DIY FM Antenna
Cmk - I am using one such home brew antenna - its hanging on a nail behind my large entertainment unit - out of sight. Hooked up to my 70's vintage Kenwood receiver. Better reception than the store bought thing - but we are in the floor of a valle...
Monitor Audio Made in China?
Labor is just one way that the Chinese cut costs. I spoke to a CEO of a well known speaker maker at a show recently. Some drivers he ordered from a well known scandanavian company were apparently sourced from china without his knowledge and contra...
unrelated to audio- digital camera buffs please
I second the Canon suggestion. Small canon's can't be beat IMO. Good lenses and good electronics (metering etc) is more important that lots of megapixels. Canon has a very usable optical viewfinder - I use this instead of the LCD to save the batte...
