Shortlist of Speaker Cables/ICs: advice/opinions
I'd like to throw in a last minute recommendation for the Kimber combo. I own a pair of 1011s, and I think it's the best RCA IC in it's price range. It's also very diverse. It beats my $250 Van Den Hul Integration on both Turn Table, just barely, ...
Theta Dreadnaught 1 vs Classe CAV-180
I would definitely give the nod to the Dread on this one. Especially for music. More dynamic, amazing depth in soundstage, sweet extended treble and rock solid bass. The Classe is pretty good, but the Dread is just a whole new level.Best wishes.
Best lines in a song
"Does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours? Gordon Lightfoot, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. And I second the Springsteen lone "You ain't a beauty but hey you're alright". I'm just not sure if I want ...
What do you recommend for less than $3000
I would 2nd the ProAcs, either Tablettes new for $1200 or 1SC's used for about the same price. The Arcam CD73 was the product of the year last year for Hi-Fi Mag I think, for $700. And the Arcam A65+ for $600, or the A80 for $1200 are great integr...
Audio Research vs YBA
I've always considered YBA preamps to be a little harsh and forward in the treble for my taste. I've heard that preamp against a Levinson no. 38 on Eggleston Works speakers and the Levinson was much more pleasant to listen to. We mainly listened t...
Need receiver - speaker matchup advice
I'd definitely go with an Arcam receiver. I have the AVR100 with the same setup, just 3 channels. Splitting 70% music, 30% movies. By far the most musical receiver I've heard including, NAD, Rotel, Denon, Onkyo, Integra, etc. I mainly listen to Ja...
Recommendation wanted to upgrade my NAD CDP
I've heard the Arcam CD73 against the NAD 542 & the Planet 2000, and it beat both of them cleanly. Just more musical & pleasant to listen too, without being boring. I think it's $799 new.Good luck,Friz
ProAc D25 or ProAc 1SC + Sub
I agree, the D25's imaging and depth work great in a small room. You only have to sit 6-8 feet away from them to enjoy the soundstage they present. They are 1 of the few speakers I've heard that sound great in both small & large rooms. If your...
ProAc D25 or ProAc 1SC + Sub
1st, you can't really go wrong with either selection, as long as you make a good choice for the Sub with the 1SC's. (I'd recommend a REL, or MJ Acoustics) Based on your 3 last questions, I'd go with the D25s. I've heard the D25s in a small room, 1...
Pre with HT bypass that will improve over Krell
I'd recommend the Audio Research LS-16. I've heard it against a Krell Showcase and it cleanly beats it. Much more musical, wth a better separation of instruments and a more open, airy sound. You should be able to get 1 here for around $1500.Best w...
receiver or amp
An Ayre V3 would be a huge upgrade for your 2 channel amp. But a better route might be to get an Arcam receiver. You can get an AVR-100 for $500 or less, and an AVR-200 for just under $1000. They are the best receivers for 2 channel music I've hea...
Preamp suggestions-upgrading from C-J PV10A
If you're going to stay with a tube preamp, I would recommend either the Audio Research LS-7, or SP-9 MKII. You should be able to buy either in the $700-800 range. They both beat the CJ PV10A in my opinion. More of a clean, airy, separation of ins...
Best Intergrated Amp. Under 1k with "PRAT"
I own a pair of Maggies, and was really satisfied using an Arcam A65+ integrated, for around $650. The Arcam A80 is a step-up, but comes in at $1200. I've spent from 10 am-8 pm on saturdays listening to nothing but Coltrane, Davis, Gillespie and M...
Technodec w/Michell moded RB250, Used P25, P5?
I've listened to a P25 and a P5 on the same system: ProAc D25s, with Ayre V-5 amp and K-5 pre-amp. The main difference to me was the P5 had more weight in the bass. The P5 was a little more rhythmic, marginally more extended treble. Both models ar...
How good is the linn av5103 as a 2 channel preamp?
I've heard the 5103 against the ls16 head-to-head and definitely preferred the ls16. The AR had better depth and a wider soundstage, but the main difference was transparency. The ls16 was much more open. Dynamics was closer, still giving the AR th...
