Think I'm going to try tubes...
About my speakers, I really, really, love them, so they aren't going to change. Also I found a review (Fi 1999) in which they paired the 1.8's with a 20 watt SET amp with amazing results so I know it's possible. http://dynaudiousa.com/products/arc...
Think I'm going to try tubes...
Let me add a bit more info- I'm not giving up on solid state by any means, I still have my SS H/T gear, but I just moved to an apartment and need to get a bit more enjoyment playing music at lower levels to keep peace w/ the neighbors. I don't wan...

comparison between Theta, Bryston, Krell, Parasound
You might want to take a look at the Gemstone Bluediamond. It did really well in a shootout over in AVSForum. They had the bryston and theta amps, as well as Sherbourne, Plinius, Lexicon, ATI, and some others I think. Anyway, they felt the bryston...
7K for preamp,HT processor, source
I'd stay away from a company like McCormack for digital stuff like a DVD player or even their HT processor. Small companies might be able to do some real R&D on an amp or 2ch pre, but not something as complex as a DVD player or processor that ...
Conrad Johnson MF2500A & Dyn's 1.3SE
Try a SimAudio w3 or w5. Dyn's have a soft dome tweeter which need a slightly forward amp or they can sound dull. Sim also makes some incredible fast bass which is needed for rock. I once tried a cj (i forget which model but it was a bit lower pow...
Ayre V5X, Sim Moon W5 vs. BC-28.
Distortion of any kind (clipping, bad source/recording) will cause a voice coil to move in an uneven pattern, which builds up heat, and causes damage. Too much power can also force the coil to move past it's intended range which builds up heat as ...
How much power do you need for realistic HT?
My amp is rated at 100 watts, and my speakers at 86db, however they are able to play plenty loud before the amp runs out of steam. Compared to a real theater, I would say it's about 85-90% as loud. As Drew pointed out, it would take an amp that co...
Can I get "Great" used speakers for $1800??
Hey Jimbo, check out the Dynaudio Contour 1.8's. This is a great all-arounder which often shows up here on a-gon under 2k, which quite a bargain when you consider they originally retailed at 3600. Great speaker, check the reviews and go have a lis...
