Does Anyone Else Member the Golden Age of Audio Insults and Product Degradation?
I recall going to Radio Shack and Lafayette Electronics as a kid for electronics parts. They were competitors that used to call each other “Laff-a-lot” and “Radio Shaft”, respectively. Heh.
Totally overwhelmed (speakers under $5k)
Hi @ddonicht , This is exactly what I thought would happen: everybody will mention their favorite speaker and amp combo and they will be right! I won’t mention any additional equipment; others have made terrific suggestions. However, YOU will ne...
Favorite song to demo or test drive speakers?
@jjss49  Thank you! Much appreciated. The folks I burned on the disk are outstanding and (most) were really well recorded.  I sometimes break out the disk and just play it for my enjoyment.
Share MYSTICAL, HAUNTING songs
Hmmmm… surprised I didn’t see… Neil Young - After the Gold Rush Yes - Your Move (A radio station used to play these back to back so much, I thought it was the same song!)   I’ll also add: Cassandra Wilson - Solomon Sang Boz Scaggs - Vanishi...
What are your favorite recordings that sound best to you?
Shirley Horn - The Music That Makes Me Dance. Breathtakingly executed in production and performance. Cassandra Wilson - New Moon Daughter. Again, excellent performances and sound quality.

What Are Your Reference Discs? or Specific Reference Tracks
I'm not sure that reference is the proper term; I burned a CD that use a collection of tunes I like and I'm well familiar with that allow me to note certain aspects of a system that I audition (ambience, soundstage, detail, bass, etc.)Most are not...

Best small, desktop speakers, $500 or under (new or used)
I also recommend Audioengine 2+ speakers for true desktop use. Really nice performance for an inexpensive price. Heck, I even got out of my "speakers should be heard and not seen" mode and bought the red ones (really attractive!)
Looking into speaker upgrade/change?
I agree with @adg101; I own the Aerial Model 7s (the original series) and it requires at the very *minimum* 100W/channel. I heard competent drive from BAT tube amps (60W), however it was in a fairly small room.I suggest either getting a more power...

Best songs to test speakers
I find it best to listen to a variety of music that is well recorded, well listened favorites. I burned a CD that I used (and continue to use) for auditions. Some show soundstaging, others impact, etc.I left out classical even though I own a numbe...
