Best CD player now made.
I'd definitely pit my CD-50 against anybody's Wadia 850 or 860, Melos DVT 24/96, Levinson 39...JUST BRING IT ON! Wadia's filter is down 3dB at 20 kHz. WHAT GOOD IS A SLOW ROLL OFF FILTER IF IT BECOMES A TONE CONTROL WELL WITHIN THE AUDIBLE RANGE??...
Best Sounding Ribbon Speakers
On a budget, the Maggies can't be beat, AND THAT IS COMMON KNOWLEDGE. The best ribbons are the new version of the Genesis Model 1. Good luck affording them...A used set of the Genesis 200's (maybe for $15k to $17k) would be a great bargain, but I ...
Best Electrostatic loudspeaker?
I've heard the big Sound Labs. You need a huge room, and even then the imaging is the antithesis of "pinpoint". It's vague and "wispy". Dynamically, they come to life at low volume better than any speaker, but at lifelike playback levels they are ...
cables for Krell KAV300i
DON'T "DUMP THE KRELL"!!! (And kick the ass of any old deaf geezer who says you should!) I have a KAV-250a, and MIT 330 Shotgun interconnect, and AudioTruth Dragon+ speaker cable, work best with it. YOU DO NEED TO RELEGATE THE STOCK POWER CORD TO ...
Cable recomendation
I have a Krell KAV-250a, and I just love this thing!! I can't say enough about MIT 330 Shotgun interconnects, used with silver speaker cable like AudioTruth Dragon+, or even Music Metre "Silver". Nordost Red Dawn or SPM might be similar or better ...
Opinions on Vandersteen 5's
The thing that is most unique and appealing about the Vandersteen 5's is the quality and adjustability of their bass drivers. Read Robert Harley's review in TAS...
What Amp will go best with Magnepan MMG?
I own the MMG's, among many others, and YOU'LL NEVER GET THE MOST OUT OF THESE ON A TIGHT BUDGET, so save your nickels! I have a Krell amplifier, and it sounds the best with whatever speakers I use with it (cone or planar). I also suggest buying A...
Building Watt/puppy clone
It's not worth cloning! The Focal tweeter rings terribly in the audible frequency range, and the midwoofer's acoustic polarity is reversed to sum in phase with the other drivers (not good design practice at all). I mean, SUV's are hugely popular r...
VINYL SURFACE NOISE
Your definition of surface noise differs from mine. I use all of the treatment items you use, but "ticks and pops" are generally permanent surface scratches or pits that can't be removed. MY DEFINITION OF SURFACE NOISE IS MORE AKIN TO WHAT MANY CA...
Linn Keltic speakers
"Not everybody listens to audiophile Classical music LP's"? Well, they should, cause they're really missing out...
Speakers to beat wife-factor ?
I think if I had to deal with the wife and child factors in that room, I'd just go with headphones. I really love mine, and I'm as yet unmarried...Maybe I love audio a little too much, for now...Someday I'll have a mansion like other rich guys on ...
CD vs. SACD vs. DVD-Audio vs Vinyl vs...
I'm happy there's no hard feelings, and I figured I'd be "preaching to the choir" regarding vinyl, with you in particular. My hope is that others can read how strong someone can like that format, and perhaps the two of us have that covered, for no...
CD vs. SACD vs. DVD-Audio vs Vinyl vs...
Albert, I'm sorry I've hurt your feelings. I was simply defending myself, and my position. I'm happy that the grammy winner you speak of is a conductor, really. I enjoy music more than anything, even more than Porsches (mostly), and that's saying ...
Home theater for a poor college student
I'd suggest a receiver that could decode DTS, if you plan to keep it more than a couple of years...and if you're home theater includes a DVD player that can pass it. If you ever find yourself watching movies alone, I strongly suggest quality headp...
CD vs. SACD vs. DVD-Audio vs Vinyl vs...
Albert, Grammies are won by whoever uses the most dynamic compression and artificial processing; NOT THAT YOU DON'T ALREADY KNOW THIS. How nice for you that you can rub shoulders with so many "big wigs". One day, I'll be in a similar position. I'l...
