advice on 5.1 or 7.1 pre/pro
In the way of a general, not specific recommendation:If good surround envelopment is a priority, and your room does not have a physical limitation to a 7.1 speaker array, then I recommend getting a 7.1 PrePro with DPLIIx and / or Logic7, not a 5.1...
Viewing Preference?
I view everything in OAR (original aspect ratio); e.g., I view 4:3 in 4:3.For cable sources, I use the darkest side bars I can in my HD STB, but I would describe them as dark gray rather than black. If black were an option, I would use that.IIRC, ...
Dali, Amphion, Zu
Emily25,Were the Dali 6 speakers you purchased the IKONs? If you did any comparison listening with other speakers, would you mind sharing your opinion on how each of those compared?ThanksBruce
Any AV pre/pro's or receiver with parametric EQ?
Flrnlamb,On the PrePro side, the Lexicon MC-12 is available with room correction EQ. The Lexicon system does not try to flatten the frequency response, but reduces / eliminates resonances in the lower frequencies, up to about 250 Hz. I heard an im...
LCD or DLP?
Dawgbyte,We already have plenty of examples of high def TVs with a higher native resolution than DVD sources: 720p sets. 480i DVD sources are simply deinterlaced/rescaled to match the native resolution of the TV, and in my opinion, 720p sets do a ...
LCD or DLP?
Dawgbyte,FYI, I've always felt DLP is better than rear projection LCD, and I think this is especially true today with the 1080p DLPs. I have not video-auditioned any LCOS sets (I purchased my two DLP sets before LCOS became a viable option). As I m...
LCD or DLP?
DB,In addition to the SXRD sets, I would also recommend looking at the HP 1080p DLP sets. Of the currently available DLPs, they seem to get the best comments at www.avsforum.com, and each technology has its own plusses and minuses. If you are not i...
7.1 HT under about 3k
Javierschmidt,FWIW, my 7.1 set up is in a room which is approximately 13' x 17' x 9.5'. Both my side speakers and rear speakers are about 7' away from the primary listening position (they're suspended from the ceiling, pointing down and toward the...
7.1 HT under about 3k
Javierschmidt,I would agree that starting with 5.1, and then expanding to 7.1 as budget allows can be a good approach. But the fact that there are no movies in 7.1 should not be a factor in making a decision on whether to go 7.1 for the objective ...
are rear surround sound speakers having same sound
My understanding of Logic 7, when used with a 5.1 source and driving a 7.1 speaker array for example, is it will process the two surround channels and make a determination of where to send the surround information. It reallocates the surround info...
7.1 HT under about 3k
Flrnlamb,Based on your experience, if one wants to expand beyond a 5.1 speaker array, do you recommend 6.1 or 7.1? I never tried 6.1. My comment on image reversal was based on postings at avs forum. I went directly from 5.1 to 7.1.I did not try pu...
DLP or LCD what do you think
Cj1capp,There is a lot of information on these and other 1080p sets at www.avsforum.com. Based on reports at avs, you might want to consider the 1080p sets from HP when comparing choices. My interpretation of the bottom line of their comments is t...
7.1 HT under about 3k
Howie,Interesting, I had never looked at the THX web site for speaker placement suggestions. My comment on not going 6.1/not placing rear speaker(s) in the center of the back wall was to avoid possible front to back image reversal. There are a lot...
7.1 HT under about 3k
Joncourage,7.1 provides a much more enveloping surround environment than 5.1. I've tried both, and am firmly committed to 7.1. I think you are making the right decision to go with a 7.1 PrePro/Receiver, as long as it has DPLIIx and/or Logic 7. (No...
Where to put side/rear speakers?
Bgordon,The Dolby diagram suggests measuring by angle and seeing where the angles intersect the back wall.As an example, if you place the rear speakers at +- 135 deg, and your back wall is 5' behind your listening area, then you would place the le...
