Question About Capacitor Upgrade in Tube Amp
Hello calieng!  Nice photography!  That cap looks pretty good. It's purpose is to keep high frequency noise from riding out on the B+ line. I would add a .01 capacitor in parallel as well. Keep the leads as short as possible. I'd use the fanciest ...
Experienced only: What have you done with room correction?
I am using 3 different DSP technologies and they all improved the sound in the rooms in which they are used. I use: whatever Emotiva offers in the MC 700, whatever Integra offers in its receivers, and whatever DSpeaker (model 2 or some such) uses....
A Question About Time Alignment
Hello Paul6001.  All the sound waves move at the same speed. The wavelengths vary with frequency, but not the speed of their travel. We are trying to reproduce music that arrived sometime in the past on the diaphragm of a microphone. We do not wan...
Does Equipment Break In, or Does Our Hearing Adjust?
Hello tcotruvo.  Equipment, cables, speakers, etc do "break in."  While Nordost uses 8 or 9 conductors for each leg of a cable to a speaker, you can buy 50 conductor ribbon cable ($0.65/foot) and have 25 silver plated conductors in each leg of "sp...
Focal Sopra No 3 vs Goldenear Triton One.R
I have been very impressed by the Triton series and own three different models. I think they are some of the best values in audio. Give them 5 hours or so to break in if you purchase them brand new. They sound a bit cold out of the box.

Magnepan .7 Alternatives
Hello flasd!  The Maggies are telling you the truth. If the music sounds bad, it's because the music was badly recorded. Although dynamics are a bit compressed with Maggies, the details are what they are famous for. I'm on my third set of Maggies ...
How good does my system have to be to realize an improvement with cables?
Hi danager!  If you bought your gear at WalMart, cables probably won't help. If your gear is from well known, quality companies, it's worth an experiment. Are you using ordinary lamp cord for speaker wire? Lots of us do. It should be 14 gauge or l...
WILL IT MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
Hello jiii 12.  You have good gear. I think you may have a problem that can be solved by changing/upgrading cables. Here's a cheap and easy experiment: Get some ordinary 14 gauge zip cord (lamp cord) from a local hardware store. Get enough for two...
Did you notice....
I must agree, a good CD player outperforms any streaming service I have used. It is handy to listening to new music that gets a good review. But I seldom agree with the reviewer. If I really like it, I buy the CD. Happy Listening!
Severe short term audio distortion when watching Netflix
It's happened to me too.  It's something at Netflix. Not your problem.
Placement of Components
Hello bgchz!  Is the Intel on the other side of the wall from your equipment? If so, turn it on and off while you are listening and see if it makes a difference. It might. A 25 foot run of balanced cable is no big deal. Pro sound outfits run 100 f...
New amp listening fatigue: Distortion or ??????
Hello dtapo!  Nobody talks about it anymore, but there is a thing called Transient Intermodulation distortion. I suspect that's what you are hearing. It may go away after about 100 or so hours of operation, as others have said. Leave the amp on al...

Hello toddsyr!  Choosing the "right" cble is like finding the "right" life partner. You have to try out a few before you can make an informed decision. Used Cable.com will let you try out cables. Used cables are broken in and much less money. Supp...
Vintage Stanton cartridge — extreme lean to one side normal?
Hello bigmikeatl!  Do not let that cartridge touch your records! Get the stylus replaced (easy to do - not too pricy). Maybe a new cartridge is a good dea.  I have my doubts about the headshell. Is it loose on the arm? Be sure the arm is not twi...
