VPI HW19-IV or Aires Black Knight
Before jumping to the Aries Black Knight, take a serious look at the Scoutmaster with the Outer Ring Clamp upgrade. Retail on that combo is $2900. I've had the Scoutmaster for 2 weeks now and it is just glorious. The soundstage is absolutely huge,...
Preamp selection advice for rock music.
Well, I haven't heard the PV10, but for the last several days I've had the Premier 17 in my system and listened extensively to Echoes from Live at Pompeii. I just the Premier 17 out and went back to the Rogue 66 I've been happy with for a year now...
Anyone compare Conrad Premier to Rogue?
See above; only local CJ dealer doesn't carry the 140.
Anyone compare Conrad Premier to Rogue?
I sort of understood that the CJ was superior, but I was wondering to what degree? Also, if you could only do one at a time, would you do the 17LS or the Premier 140 first? What would make the biggest difference, given the rest of the chain?
Anyone compare Conrad Premier to Rogue?
If you could only do one at time, what do you think would make a difference? A friend who used to deal both seems to think getting the 17LS first would make more of a difference, because he says that the 66 doens't give me all the detail I could g...
Phono pre-amps: C-J EF-1 vs. EV-1 vs. Cary??
Get the EV1. I have it and it runs very quiet. I have it set at 1k for my Benz Glider HO on my MMF7. The unit runs quiet, especially for tubes, and offers that gorgeous midrange. I was trying to decide between Cary and CJ and I love the EV1.
ASL Mini Phono
I had an ASL mini-phono for a while, hooked to an MMF7. For the $$$, it's hard to beat. Has that great tube sound and is relatively quiet. You need an HO MC or an MM cartridge for it though. It's advertised at 57db of gain, but I think 37-39 is mo...
Best Amps for Martin Logans????
I second what Dannylw and Edesilva said. When I got my Aeons, I looked at all kinds of amps, including the Parasound monos that have gotten rave reviews. They sounded nice, but when I hooked a Rogue 88 Magnum up to the Aeons they just bloomed beau...
Rogue 88 problems
I use an Audio Magic Illusion power cord on the 88 with great results. The sound is more expansive, for lack of a better word.
2 channel SACD vs Multichannel SACD players...
Eldartford, the only DVD-A's I have are American Beauty and the producers cut of Emmylou Harris, and both have 2 channel separate mixes.
Sam loves the McIntosh MCD205. Do You?
I've had an MCD205 for 9 months now and been very happy with it. The first one I got had a few tracking issues, but the second has worked great for the most part. There have been 1-2 dirty disks that skipped where they didn't in some others, but a...
DC v AC
For an alternative response, I picked this up from Audio Asylum, and they seem to prefer AC. I find it interesting reading, though a little over the top at some points. Allow me to try and explain a little on the different types of motors found on...
Next worthwhile step from an MMF7
Well, I had considered the Aries/JM12 combo, or perhaps the TNT JR, since I am in the industry and could probably get a discount. What about the Encounter arm? And has anyone compared the 150 to a 160 or a 200 series?
Next worthwhile step from an MMF7
One other point; what type of sonic improvements could I expect from a different table/arm.
Phono preamp advice.
Lachobba, with the Benz I noticed a much richer sound. The bass was more extended and had a better punch to it, and the midrange was smoother. The soundstage was also tremendously extended, and the the overall sound was quieter. Same with the CJ, ...
