Sophia II's and Pass Labs etc
Hi Toffeng,I don't own the Sophia II's, but I am currently listening to a few different combination's of gear driving my Avalon Opus speakers (full range speakers at 87 dB efficiency in a rather large room). Among the amps and preamps are the Pass...
Seeking suggestions for Preamp
Hi Madfloyd,I haven't heard the Doshi Alaap so I am not sure what type of sound you are going for. You might put the Cary SLP-05 on your list if you want to stay with tubes. I was auditioning an ARC LS-26 in my system with my Pass amp, and I didn'...
Pass Labs XP-10 & XP-20 preamps
Hi Peter,The dryness in the bass which I spoke of seems to be going away as the XP10 is burning in.I took a look at your system and judging from who you were working with when purchasing, we seem to live relatively close. I sent you an email via t...
Pass Labs XP-10 & XP-20 preamps
Hi Muralman,I have a few sets of cables to choose from, but currently my favorites with the Pass amp are the Alpha Core Boa's, which I didn't like with my H2O amp. I think I am currently using Oval Nine's (I forget the manufacturer's name) upstair...
Pass Labs XP-10 & XP-20 preamps
This message is mainly meant for Peterayer, who wanted to hear how the Pass XP-10 and the H2O Audio Fire preamps compare in my system. I am running them into a Pass X250.5 which drives Avalon Opus speakers, with a Wavelength Cosecant V3 as a sourc...
Personal amp evolution
Hi Vince,My S250 does have the Sonicap bypass caps and the latest modules. And yes, I did buy an NOS DAC or two, and really find them extremely musical (MHDT Labs Havana, recently replaced by a Wavelength Cosecant V3). I don't think the Pass ampli...
Good preamp match for Bryston 4B ST
I used to own a Bryston 4B ST. The input imedance is 50 kOhms, which by today's standards is an easy load for most preamps. My favorite preamp mated with the 4B ST was an Audible Illusions Modulus 3A, which you might find used within your budget. ...
Personal amp evolution
Starting in early high school 29 years ago and I still have the sickness.- HH Scott tube receiver- Techniques receiver- B&K ST 140- B&K ST 202 Plus (still own it)- Arragon 8008 (borrowed long term from a friend)- Bryston 4B ST- H2O Audio S...
Reducing PC Jitter
There is another manner to reduce jitter on USB connections, and that is to use a computer that has an extremely good USB implementation. The Fit-PC Slim has no on-board switching power supplies and an extremely clean USB output. The PC is low pow...
WHAT'S THE BEST SOLID STATE PREAMP FOR $3000 ??
I am running a Pass X250.5. After trying all sorts of preamps, I wound up purchasing an H2O Audio Fire, but I've actually never seen one up for sale used. I have a Pass XP-10 coming next week, which are sometimes available for around 3k. I can let...
Pass Labs XP-10 & XP-20 preamps
Hi,I own a H2O S250 Signature amplifier as well as a Pass Labs X250.5 amplifier, and my speakers (Avalon Opus) are not nearly as difficult to drive as Muralman's Apogees. While I like the bass control of the H2O amplifier, in my system the Pass am...
EMM Labs DAC 2 presentation
Hi Frontier1,I have been through a number of DACs over the years, ranging from a few hundred dollars to about six thousand in price, ranging from tube, solid state, upsampling and NOS. I am currently using a Wavelength Cosecant V3, which gives a f...
Most musical player or DAC?
I third the MHDT Labs Havana. Judging from the rest of your system, you would enjoy the sound of the Havana, or another non-oversampling filterless DAC. The Havana has good linearity through the frequencies, with a little more presence in the midr...
Leave solid state amps on? Or turn off everytime?
Someone asked which Pass manual refers to longevity based on power cycles. This quote is from the X25.5 manual:"So how long will this hardware last? It is our experience that, barring abuse or the odd failure of a component, the first things to go...
Leave solid state amps on? Or turn off everytime?
Pass Labs even states in their manuals that the more often an amplifier heats up and cools down, the lower the life span of the amp. Capacitors also have a longer life if they stay charged.
