McIntosh DS200

Just got an email ad from McIntosh about the new DS200 streamer/DAC. My first reaction is, why is the DAC not upgradeable? Also, there is no digital out. This is a beautiful piece of equipment, but I am dismissing it immediately because of that. Am I wrong?

Mahler,

“Mac customers tend not to want all in one solutions as much as customers of a certain audio company whose name starts with “B”.”

How do you square that thought with the enduring popularity of McIntosh integrated amps, preamps with DACs and MM/MC phono built in, and even a receiver model that’s never gone out of production?  What company with B?

I now own this unit

I was basically seeking a streamer/dac combo with Tidal connect, built in digital preamp, tv connections, and something  that does not look like IT gear but rather a nice looking audio device

so this unit nails the part above

I owned the D150 previously which was excellent so no concerns about buying this sound/sight unseen, same goes for most mac gear actually at least for me

straight from plug in and power on,  it recognized my network instantly and Tidal connect was an instant go

cheap remote compared to the D150

sq thus far I would say is excellent, nicer detail on this DA2 dac module over the DA1 yet still smooth

nothing mind blowing here, just a really good piece no more no less

chassis is likely a lot bigger than it needs to be, I liked the density of the D150

I have not tested preamp functionality direct to power amp yet

pretty sure HDMI will be hit miss with my TV but I can use optical

cleaned up some cable mess over my previous streamer/dac/power supply separates setup which is always nice

I'll be using this with a variety of amps for a while and then likely do a comparison against a Hegel H400

the all in one route is looking more appealing with each passing day

I suspect this D200 with something like an MC462

would be end game-ish for many

I bought the DS200 in December 2025 from a very good and quite experienced dealer in Berkeley, California.  I bought the unit to replace a Cambridge CXNV2.  The Cambridge sounded more like FM out of my Tuner than a CD, good sounds but the resolution could have been better.  The Cambridge was in my Living Room interfaced to the Internet via WiFi, that connection worked quite well, I had a few dropouts but they were far and few between. I connected the DS200 as per the manual, exactly, I should say this unit has the worst User Interface I have ever been exposed to, or experienced.  The result of following the manual, exactly, No Noises. I contacted my very helpful Dealer for technical support, they could not get it to produce any noises either.  I tried, they tried, a large amount of verbal encouragement was deployed... No Noises of any kind. I connected the DS200 in my office via Ethernet Cable directly to my router and the unit did work, it just would not work in WiFi Mode, the UI did not improve once I got the DS200 to work.  Because I needed a WiFi connection, plus I was tired of the really lousy UI, I returned the unit to the Dealer and purchased a different unit that does work in WiFi Mode positioned exactly where my CXNV2 also worked flawlessly. I am amazed McIntosh released the DS200 with such a poorly developed User Interface, my opinion, others my disagree. I am very partial to McIntosh, I hated to return the DS200, no choice.  I am running a McIntosh C2200 Pre-Amp and MC2301 Power Amps.
