I’m running an Odyssey Candela tube preamp.built in Indiana US. I like it, but it can be a challenge to get it built promptly. Very inexpensive considering the sound quality though. DM me if interested in more detail.
Suggestions for a tube pre and power amp

I am writing to seek your experienced suggestions regarding an upgrade to my current stereo setup. My current system consists of Revel F328Be speakers powered by a Luxman 590Mk2 Class A integrated amp. My frontend includes a Sonic Transporter (Roon core) powered by a Farad LPS, a Holo Red streamer, and a Holo May KTE DAC.
I am considering transitioning to a tube preamplifier and a solid-state power amplifier combination. While my speakers have a 91dB sensitivity, the impedance dips to 3 ohms between 100Hz and 200Hz.
My current shortlists are as follows:
- Power Amps: Coda S5.5 Class A or Coda No. 8 V1.
- Tube Preamps: Backert Labs Rhumba, Spatial Audio Raven, or Motherlode XL.
I am looking for a 3D holographic, warm sound with a high level of clarity and detail. While I am aware of the general rules regarding impedance matching, I would value your insights on how these specific components might pair together. I am also very open to any other combinations you might recommend.

for preamp, I want full featured Tubes, and chose a Vintage McIntosh unit, MX110Z, had Audio Classics overhaul it for me, this is why I got one. If it dies, I get another, no fooling around. https://positive-feedback.com/Issue77/vintage_mcintosh_experience.htm I use a Chase Remote Line Controller to get remote volume, balance, and mute You must have the remote, there are no controls on the unit. It is impossible for me and/or any of my friends to detect if it is IN or OUT via the tape monitor loop, it simply does it's job. Every once in a while, I shake my head, take it out, put it back in, it ain't there, but it is.

@lals great initial list and some great recommendations in this thread. I’ve had Coda Amps and Pre’s in my system, have paired Tube Preamps with SS Class A amps. Coda makes great gear, Doug is accessible, call him and he’ll get you on the “right” amp for your gear. Someone mentioned Coda not being Class A, not accurate, they make various amps, some are 100 % class A and others are biased to produce a certain percentage of class A. On LTA, they also make great products, the pre that has been recommended can be fully balanced, you can talk with them as well. I’d call Doug at Coda, ask what Amp or Amps he would reclined and what Tube Pre’s he thinks would pair well. Watts alone don’t tell the full story on how well an amp can control and drive speakers, I have speakers that are rated efficiently but dip on impedance and like current, damping factor that can really control them. |
