I was half kidding about having golden ears even though mine are quite well-trained.
If an average person having an audio system and have a basic understanding of music like imaging and soundstage hearing is a 5. I’d rate mine a 7.
Because of the mids-focused music that I listen to and also owning an electrostat system, I’m quite perceptive of traits like smoothness, clarity, transparency. Grainniness is a big one that a lot of people miss and IMO, a big indicator the system is good but the cables are bottlenecking.
Hearing is a skill that needs training and experience. No doubt about it. Oftentimes you come across a person that says "I grew up playing XYZ instruments" or I’m a professional piano player" and these people are quite perceptive in the instruments they play. More so than an average person. Why? Because they have experience.
People that call BS on cables are missing out. But Imma be honest with you, I’ve come across MANY that claim all dacs and amplifiers sound the same. Buckeye owner has also claimed "all well designed amplifiers sound identical". So in the grand scheme of things, the naysayer of cables don’t matter.
