Another Japan Thread (Cartridges & Audiophiles)

Hi All.  I realize that there are a couple Japan threads out there, but I am going in four weeks and my needs/intentions differ from previous.  I would like to enjoy some audio listening while there (perhaps meet other audiophiles and hang out in an audio bar or club) and maybe buy a cartridge to bring home. I will mostly be in Kyoto, but a little time in Tokyo.  In the thread currently running, someone mentioned buying cartridges at DS Audio.  Other suggestions - especially in Kyoto?  What about suggestions for bars/clubs or audio groups that I might connect with?  I notice a couple Agon members (  @vinylrestingplace and @badbruno ) that had positive interests in this.  Please feel free to chime in.  Thanks, Peter

Peter, you’re going to enjoy the Trip. Kyoto is a beautiful serine place if you are able to go while Cherry Blossoms.  Blossoms like you have never experienced, so heavy and the size off large watermelons with branch’s supported for the weight.

I did go to a kisa jazz bar in Tokyo.  Amazing bar with maybe room for 15 people with the walls full of Vinyl.  Any requests were welcome !! We had fun talking and enjoying the music and bar.   These places are very special and many go after work to sit and listen and quietly enjoy each others company from and awesome old school system.

Don’t know if I provided any help help

In Kyoto, the scene is a bit more scattered than Tokyo’s, but there are a few places that consistently come up as “must visit” for jazz‑and‑listening‑focused nights. I can’t look up live data this moment, so treat this as a curated short list to investigate and cross‑check opening days/hours.
Deep‑listening / record‑oriented spots
•    Yamato-ya (丸太町 / Marutamachi area)
Classic Kyoto jazz spot with a large record library (often quoted as several thousand LPs) and a strong “no talking while the music is playing” culture. Think proper hi‑fi playback, coffee or a simple drink, and a room of people just quietly listening.
•    Jazz In Rokudenashi (Gion–Shijō area)
A long‑running jazu kissa mixing café, bar, record room, and small venue feeling, tucked away near the traditional Gion district. It’s more intimate and atmospheric than “fancy,” good if you want that slightly worn‑in, time‑capsule vibe.
Small bars with jazz focus (more relaxed)
•    Hello Dolly
A well‑known Kyoto jazz bar that sometimes has live sets and sometimes runs more as a record‑/BGM‑based jazz bar, depending on the night. It is central and relatively easy to drop into after dinner, but you may want to confirm whether a live charge or event is on that evening.
•    Room 335 (Pontocho top end)
Tiny upstairs bar space on/near Pontocho that leans into jazz, small community events, and occasional sessions or open‑mic‑style nights. Good if you want to actually chat at the bar and not be in a super‑strict “no talking” kissa environment.
