Perhaps we’ve been lucky, I can’t say. But I can say that if it came down to it, I would choose my cats.

One cat, alone, can get awfully mischievous. I always think it's better for a cat or a dog, for that matter, to have a buddy.
cats and speakers - looking for clues
My family decided to get a cat. Being an audio-hobbyist for past 20 years, I have collected a modest line of speakers. In a few conversations with friends, I have been warned that speakers and cats do not mix very well. I am certainly curious, not so say anxious to know more, before it is too late.
Does anyone in this group host, or used to host a cat (or cats) and speakers under the same roof ? Could you please share your experience ? Should I be concerned that a cat will use my speakers as scratching posts ? Can it be mitigated/avoided somehow ? If the risk is high, whats the best strategy to deal with the situation, outside of obvious, such as barricading my speakers in a dedicated room ?
I'd truly appreciate any hint or clue that can help.
Best - Pete.
My wife and I took in an adult stray we named Charlie Sheen (he had a white patch under his nose...you get the drift) in 2012. He was a good boy for the 10 years he ruled the house. Then we rescued two kittens barely a month old in August 2023. Dobby and Kossa have never shown interest in my numerous speakers, except Dobby runs into whichever room I'm playing music in to sit and listen. To be safe, I contacted Digital Deck Covers.
Absolutely phenomenal products and service. Some speaker brands are already sized (JBL, Focal, Tannoy, Dynaudio, KEF, Wilson ), but you can do measurements off a template they provide and they will custom make you covers. Take my advice and go with the Double-Sided Quilt Nylon material. Pillow soft. Slide on and off with ease and look great. All mine are black.
I've had them make covers for my Klipsch Forte II's, Heresy's, KG 4's, Polk Audio 10B's, and most recently my KLH 5's. When shipping me my KLH covers, they accidentally sent me a set of covers for a pair of Dynaudio Bookshelf speakers. I offered to send them back, and they told me it was their mistake and to keep them. The covers fit my Klipsch KG 1.5's perfectly. The most expensive set of covers I've had made were less than $200. The best audio related investment I've made in a while. |
@wsappington -- Did you go with the Cotton fabric on your Digital Deck Covers? You said you didn’t get covers for your main speakers because the cats might like to work out on the cloth. Wasn’t sure if you were talking about the cotton covers Digital Deck makes. If you had elected the cotton, I was curious about the cotton thickness. I really love the double quilted option. Very nice. |
My Father always used to say, “The only good cat, is a dead cat” Mind you he may have had a point….. He used to race pigeons. However, a dog he had a different view with it being “man’s best friend” The ones he had (unlike cats) were very useful. They looked after the cats that were out for the birds, and all the rats that were out for the pigeon corn. He was never into audio, but his dog barking meant it was doing its job, and was music to his ears |
