What punches much higher than it's price point?
Just bought a Townshend Audio reference preamp in part, because an owner posted how it performed better than preamps he owned that were more than twice the price ! I concur wholeheartedly. This makes me wonder what other audio diamonds are hiding out there ? What component have you purchased new that so impressed you at its price point ?

Products punching above their weight class is always a hot topic… synergy as mentioned by others tends to be the real magic. When designers of audio gear use their knowledge to design gear that picks the best parts for that design, that work as force multipliers when paired together. When that gear gets paired with other gear that it has synergy with, magic. When the use of both scientific measurements and modern engineering are used in combination with intuition, ears that tune gear that sounds great not just measures great, bam, magic. When designers understand the sound signature they are shooting for and the consumer aligns with that sound signature, that’’s when gear lunches above its weight class. Schitt Gear, Linear Tube Audio, Omega Speakers, Pine Tree Audio, MHDT, Coda, Legacy, Fritz, Alta Audio all make gear that is often reviewed to as Giant Killers. |
@dayglow I'll +1 your Acoustic Energy. I heard them at a show and felt they performed extremley well for the money. I also feel Magnepan delivers some of the best imaging available at their price points on the lesser expensive side of their products especially. |
@greenngoldcheesehead Thx! My most important audiophile bias is balance within the frequency band. Maybe bland to some but I don't like frequency spotlighting. It's irrelevant whether the component is warm or on the cool side as long as its balanced though the frequency range. |
Parts Express is selling speaker wire that a well known company was selling for serious money. The 16 conductor braided wire is now going for $2/foot. Highly recommended. It is the little brother to the cable GR Research is selling for $32.50 per foot. It is tedious to work wth but an excellent performer. I'm using both. Happy Listening. |
