Well one of my TTs is an HW-40 with an Experian on it. Current replacement cost for the whole megilla is maybe $30K. Fun to watch a 10 year old girl cue up Louis on it. Difference is what makes horse races and all that.

I sold my Thorens TD160 in 1993 when one of my children snapped off the cantilever on my BluePoint Special. Just picked up a decent LP12 about 8 months ago after a year with a Pro-Ject Carbon Debut Evo. Still had some decent vinyl stored away. Back to the topic at hand - Just invested in my first decent MC Cart and combined with the suspension of an LP12, my kids cannot touch it 30 years later. |
@maam522a funny you should bring up the needles. They were steel. My grandmother was very particular about them. They lasted for only 10 hours and I had to keep track of how many sides I played, each side = ~ 3 minutes, and then out went the old and in went the new. An envelop of 10 new needles cost a buck. But a dull needle would ruin the records. She was very careful about the records. I am telling you she was just like any of us today, only this was early to mid-1950s. When she died my grandfather, who did not have the spirit, took the whole record collection to the dump. Fortunately the Victrola was saved. In fairness he was distraught. It took me years to get copies of all the Austin High Gang, Bix, Louis, and, and, and that she had in that collection. I can attest that kids like that music, even today. They will listen, dance, laugh and play because that music makes them happy. |
@dwette ok, that's reasonable. I was thinking of a single arm situation and a lever. I would not want to handle something that delicate myself. @billstevenson great story! I too very much enjoy when my kids play records, on my TT or theirs - which I gave them. |
