You are right-meant S5. Sorry
Upgrade to dcs bartok.
My current system includes a simaudio 390 preamp/dac/streamer. Most of my listening is tidal and qobuz with roon nucleus. Rest of system is michi p5 amp(surprisingly good IMO) and sonus faber serafino speakers. Thinking of upgrading digital to dcs bartok. Obviously pricey upgrade. Thoughts on how much improvement would be gained? Obviously very subjective but just seeking input from anyone familiar with both simaudio and dcs bartok
thanks

I went through DAC shoot out of Bartok, Weiss, and Grimm. Had 6 or so previous DACs. Bartok hands down is the best I’ve had in my system. here is my write up: https://forum.audiogon.com/discussions/dcs-bartok-apex-vs-weiss?highlight=Bartok%2B |
I currently have a Denafrips Pontus II DAC. I listened to the dCS Bartok at a dealer expecting great things given the 10x price difference. For reference, I tend to listen to a lot of music with acoustic instruments and vocals. The Bartok sounded good overall, but interestingly, I wasn’t bowled over by the differences in sound quality especially in light of the 10x price difference. In fact, I came away thinking that I preferred my current Pontus DAC. These were my listening notes from that day: In terms of how it presents music, the dcs Bartok is more like the Qutest than the Pontus. It emphasizes the primary components of music, while the Pontus has a more balanced presentation of all components of the music. When listening to jazz, the Pontus seems to be actually better at resolving interactions in music with complex rhythms. As a result, the dcs Bartok seemed to be less good than the Pontus at conveying Pace, Rhythm and Timing. The sound from the dcs Bartok seemed to feel less playful and agile than that from the Pontus
Compared to the Pontus, the dcs Bartok is perhaps the better "audiophile" product, but the Pontus has a sense of natural engagement and flow that perhaps even the Bartok is surprisingly unable to match. |
