Can you recall how many output channels were in use?
The reason I ask that was a bee in my bonnet that says the easiest way to improve sound reproduction is to add more channels.
It was not long after stereo (2-channel) LPs were introduced that 4-channel records came out. Then SACD added 3 or 4 channels to CD's 2 channel, and Blu-ray Audio extends that to seven channels of high resolution PCM. Later formats like Dolby Atmos extend the number of virtual channels to 32.
