EverSolo DMP-A8 with Denafrips Pontus 15th, both have i2S

For the past couple of years I’ve been using a Bluesound NODE (N130) with a Denafrips ARES II DAC (USB). I liked it very much!

Well, I got the itch to not leave well enough alone, if you know what I mean!

I purchased an EverSolo DMP-A8, thinking this all-in-one could replace what I had. It sounds pretty good, but, started missing my Denafrips DAC (which I sold). A couple days ago I ordered from audioman58 (Thank you!), a Pontus 15th Edition, can’t wait to get it!

This brings me to my question please. The DMP-A8 has i2S Output, which I plan on using to input i2S on the Pontus 15th (I hope for compatibility?). Is there still a reason to get a Denafrips DDC? Or, am I most of the way there with i2S on both my streamer and DAC?

I’ve been out of town on vacation, and just now reading this thread I originally started. Very interesting indeed your USB findings. I thought I tried USB, but not completely sure if I gave it a real chance. I should definitely revisit to compare with i2s I’m currently using. I’ll be home soon, and will give it a try.

Have tried the USB connection yet?  From everything I have been able to research, the other inputs don't utiilze the Denafrips clock, so you might not be getting full performance out of your Pontus.

Has anyone had this experience on their Pontus?  On some tracks, I am getting distortion in the treble on the left channel, as if one of my tweeters is blown.  It is only on some tracks, and even on those, the intensity of the behavior varies.  But "Subterranean Homesick Alien", the third track on OK Computer, the distortion and fuzziness is very bad when the lead guitar comes in at 0:06.

I wanted to isolate the DAC, so I cable swapped and the distortion followed to the other speaker.  I swapped out my Eversolo A8 for a Bluesound Node and same problem.  I tried different cables, same problem.  I was worried maybe it was my speakers, so I bypassed the DAC and there was zero distortion.  So it is definitely the DAC.  I've tried in NOS and OS, with different inputs, same result.

Denafrips had me update the firmware, no joy.  They are still looking into it.  Anyone else had a similar situation?
