The Holbo mk2 Airbearing Turntable System is a great turntable that has an air bearing platter and air bearing linear arm . It is VERY easy to set up and use. The compressor is completely silent and is used in the same room as the turntable. Unlike other air bearing tonearms on the market, the Holbo mk2 tonearm has the ability to adjust the VTA while playing the record and adjust the azimuth!! which is very, very important. Without this, there is no top sound, because every cartridge has at least a small inconsistency, which a good tonearm like the Holbo can fix. Tracking is excellent without problems, as is the choice of cartridge; you can use any! |
@pmcarro The engineering principle behind a turntable and tonearm is similar to that of the steering in a car. For the car to feel safe, there can be no play between the various ball joints, bearings and drag links that make the suspension and steering work. If anything is loose the car might feel a bit scary to drive. The same idea applies to LP reproduction: for best results there must be no play between the surface of the platter and the surface to which the cartridge is mounted. Any play (slop) in the various bearings will cause mistracking of the LP. It might be subtle and only come off as a coloration. Users of the ET tonearm have often mentioned that a higher pressure pump causes it to sound better. The reason why is quite obvious. |
Absolutely every bearing has clearance. The only difference is what the tolerance is between the moving parts and what the surface is from which the stiffness of the bearing, vibrations when moving, what kind of noise, etc. comes from. The car probably wouldn't move if it didn't have some minimal clearance in the bearings... |
