Classical Music for Aficionados

I would like to start a thread, similar to Orpheus’ jazz site, for lovers of classical music.
I will list some of my favorite recordings, CDs as well as LP’s. While good sound is not a prime requisite, it will be a consideration.
  Classical music lovers please feel free to add to my lists.
Discussion of musical and recording issues will be welcome.

Fabulous work! One of my very favorite modern works and arguably the most popular composition out of the Second Viennese School. A twelve tone row with strong elements of late Romanticism making the paring with the Beethoven not quite as odd as it may seem at first glance.  The chorale in the Adagio is a thing of beauty.  Of note is the use of alto saxophone in the score for a very interesting color.
