Status vs. Prestige

Over the last couple of months I've picked up a couple of original Status label albums. I know Status was a subsidiary label of Prestige, but I was wondering if anyone knew why? It seems like some of the artists are common to both labels. The one thing I notice is that the vinyl pressings seem to be inferior. Was this a cheapo budget label or something? If so its kind of a shame because some of the music is great.
