phono input to low? ?

i just purchased a used music hall 2.2le turntable from a friend for a good price (less than $200) i have purchased some new records and after setup it sound good (too me as a first timer). it has an upgraded cart.,a grado red. problem is the sound coming out my pre-amp is super low. the pre-amp i am using is a sony es da200es (i know not the best but its only used as a pre-amp) it has a mm phono input. my question is if i get an outboard phono stage will that boost the input signal? i.e. make it louder? i had an old luxman turntable before this and the output was louder. does the output range vary from tables?

thanks, this is all new too me.

I believe the Grado Red has 5mv output. It should have plenty of output for your Sony. What cartridge did you use on the old Luxman turntable?
the luxman had a shure that literally fell apart on me. upon further review i have noticed that the volume level of my records varies allot. is this normal?
