Neeme Jarvi Conducts Chabrier

For the first time in quite a while we have a classical CD that is worthy of review. It is the works of Chabrier conducted by Neeme Jarvi and the Orchestre de le Suisse Romande and recorded in Victoria Hall Geneva Switzerland (CHANDOS CHSA 5122). This is possibly the best these works have been presented and recorded since the Mercury era in the 60’s when Paul Paray recorded them with the Detroit Symphony.
This set of works is much more complete than the Paray. All the tracks are standouts with fantastic sound. There is tons of air and acoustic mass of the hall. With the “Suite Pastoral” being the standout orchestration cut. The bass and dynamic impact is phenomenal.
The recording which is a DSD Dual Layer SACD is in the manner of a Telarc recording sonically. The 24/96 CD layer of this will be more than enough to convince many that DSD is the way to go for digital recording. I can only imagine the SACD layer to be even better. Not to be missed it is the classical CD of the year so far. This CD really packs a wallop sonically and musically.
This one will really give your system a workout and the music will have you coming back to it every time. Too bad this could not be taken to a mechanical medium on LP. Such as Reference Recordings has done with some of its digital titles recently. Maybe its time for someone to convince CHANDOS to get back into records again.
