Need suggestion on turntable Cartridge

I just inherited my fathers old tuntable and all of his albums. He has not used it in many years and told me that he thinks it needs a new needle. Is this the same thing as cartridge. The turntable is a Pioneer PL-400 which is from the early 80's or late 70's. Can anyone suggest a brand of cartridge and a place that I can get it that would be good for this application.(try to keep it under $50) This is my first time using a turn table so I could also use any information you might have about how to properly set up and use the unit.
