Most achingly-beautiful music

Ultimately, we listen to music to be moved, for example, to be elated, exulted, calmed or pained. Which are the 3 most affecting pieces of music do you find the most affecting?

Slipknot you may want to check out Jacqueline Dupre's version on EMI Mfg's Catalog # 47614
Highly Recommended!
Et Fur Elise is by Beethoven not Chopin. This is a mandatory piece every 4th -5th year piano student must learn. But I agree with you, it is yet another to add to the group. Yes this is a worthwhile post, something we all can share.
For those interested Rachmaninov's 2nd Symphony (2nd movement) was also performed by Eric Carmen "All by myself" it is a beautiful piece. Does anyone know if he gave himself credit for the music?
Wrong on 2 counts on that last post. The Eric Carmen song is "Never gone to fall in love again"? at least that is the lyrics used and the music is from the 3rd movement -Adagio of Rach's 2nd Symphony. Still, anyone know if he gave himself credit for the music?
This was definitely from his 1st solo album. As a matter of fact I saw Carmen in Concert in I believe 1972 (Spectrum Philly) after he left the Rasberries in what was his 1st solo tour. That is when I first heard him perform the piece and noticed the similarities with Rach but didn't note any other pieces he performed that were similar to any of Rach or other's work.
Sdcampbell Just listened last night to "The King of Peace Is Dead" by Nina. First time in many years. What a concidence you mention it. It is a heartfelt performance to be sure.
Thanks Hcfolm & Timwat I was always curious about those details since it was so obvious the melody was the same almost verbatim . Now Timwat you have me confused somewhat. You have stated he lifted the music from the 2nd Concerto not the Symphony. The piece I am talking about is definitely from the 3rd movement of 2nd sym not any of Rach Concerto pieces which I am intimately familiar with. Are you speaking of other pieces as well that he plagerized?
Schubert String Quartet #14; Death and the Maiden, Second Movement. The many variations in this movement is quite unusual, achingly-beautiful and brilliant for those unfamiliar with it, highly recommended. I would also be interested in recommendations for a good recording and performance of this piece. I currently have the Prague String Quartet on the Denon label.
Hi Detlof

Both vinyl and CD. I will check on your recommendations. Thanks. Will
Gounod's "Ave Maria" performed to a Samba rhythum by the Brazilian artist Jorge Aragao. Hard to imagine right? Well it is just a beautiful arrangement and performance and its L!!!I!!V!!E. Label: Universal Mfg's Catalog#: 1001192
"Gershwin Fantasy" Joshua Bell w/John Williams and the London Symphony on Sony Classical.

I just picked this up after hearing on PBS and the whole album is spellbinding. A must have for Gershwin fans. On "Embraceable You" Bell and the Orchestra change keys 3 times on one passage, talk about achingly beautiful, a definite qualifier.
I had a group of guys over a few weeks back and one brought a CD recording of "Pavorotti & Friends for Guatemala and Kosovo". One of the cuts really touched me and cuts the cloth of achingly beautiful to my ears "Tu che m' hai preso il cor" sung by Laura Pausini and Luciano Pavorotti. It is the unique voice of Pausini on this piece that caught my ear. There are versions of it on youtube, check it out, it is too beautiful to me. Cynics beware, it's probably not for you!
Speaking of the Beach Boys, I've been on a recent binge of their music. Three of their pre Pet Sounds albums contained several really good examples of the progression of their harmonies and Brian's music chops, a real step up from the early Chuck Berry inspired riffs and the simple but lovely "In my Room" and "Surfer Girl" ballads. The first two songs off "Shut Down Volume 2" and last two from "Beach Boys Today" both recently remastered in both Stereo and mono versions. I haven't heard "Kiss me Baby" for 40 years at least, oh those teenage memories flooding back.

"Don't Worry Baby"
"The Warmth of the Sun"

"Kiss me Baby"
"Please let me Wonder"
First time I heard it Al from a movie score no less. I agree it is a great interpretation of that song, thanks for the link!
Well many of the above pieces would certainly be on my long list but here are a few more that I cherish that aren't - Mozart's K364 Concertina for Violin & Viola (Mozart at his lyrical best) Rimsky Korsakov "Scherazade" 3rd Movement especially. Mozart's 2rd Movement (Andante) from 41st Symphony "Jupiter" This one always gives me goosebumps even on a table radio. 2nd movement from Mozart's #20 Piano Concerto K466, closing theme to "Amadeus", simply one of the most elegant and perfect pieces of music I have ever heard.
