MMF 5.1 w/M97XE cart., hum + no sound left chan.?

Replaced the Goldring cart. w/ Shure M97XE just to experiment. No sound out of the left channel, and a strong hum out of same. I then tightened the ground to the amp, and no longer have hum, but when I move the tonearm close to the platter, I get a metallic sounding click as tonearm nears platter. Any suggestions?
