Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

I’ve been a Chesky fan for years!  All of his recordings are first rate and some make my soundstage grow well beyond my speakers.

Have you heard The Hi-Fi Collective?

Ella Fitzgerald was really a blond and wore a size nine dress!

Is this thread running out of steam?

Quick-- someone bring up something controversial about Jazz ! ;o)

That’s about as controversial as I can get.😁

Does anyone here like Sun Ra?  He’s put out a ton of albums, but I really can’t listen to any of them.

Is it just me?

@alexatpos

Ever since I got a streamer, I have not bought very many CD’s, but I have streamed and enjoyed both albums.

@curiousjim  If by any chance you do not have these two albums.

I actually just finished the Guide To Jazz Recordings and I wrote a copious amount of notes.  While listening to all these great people, I’m hoping to put it all into some sort of Excel spreadsheet.  I’m happy to say that I have that I have a ton of new music to enjoy!

@stuartk

What about Jerry Bergonzi ?

He’s great. Since I bought a Bluesound Node and Amazon Music HD, the world is my oyster, for $8.99 a month.

Was reading a Music Direct ad selling Blue Note tone poet series and the first album listed was Herbie Nichols,  Herbie Nichols Trio.  So I’m about halfway through it and it is a wonderful Sunday morning sound.🎶

Orrin Evans,  Listen To The Band.

Kinda all over the place, but definitely worth a listen.

I have never heard a bad RVG album.  And I had no idea there were 50+ Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers albums out there! I guess I know what I’m listening to the rest of the week.😁

@acman3

I to have never heard of Depree Bolton.  I listened to a couple of cuts on YouTube and will stream some more in the morning after my wife is off to work.

Thanks!

Just listened to Sonny Stitt And The New Yorkers.   Sonny Stitt might not be in my top five, but he’s probably in my top twenty. 😁

@pjw81563

listening to Sonny Stitt,  Blows The Blues.  In my humble opinion, it’s wonderful!

@ho249

After seeing your post, I’ve been listening to Ralph Moore this evening.  For someone neither one of us has ever heard of,  he has a bunch of really good recordings online. Tonight I listened to Three Score, Round Trip and Oscar Peterson meets Roy Hargrove and Ralph Moore.

Thanks for the tip!

@rok2id

So Blue Note started in 1939 and Simmons first record came out in 1966.  Maybe times were tough at Blue Note. Maybe Simmons felt wronged and that was his way trying to get even. But with man’s inhumanity to man, nothing would surprise me.

And I doubt they’d want to get cash machines like Mingus messed up.

@designsfx

I’m about half way through Conception Of Thought and I am enjoying it very much.

Thanks for the suggestion.  Hearing new to me music, keeps it all fresh.

@stuartk

Thanks to the Penguin, yes I am. He’s on my ever growing list.  So far, the only album I’ve listened to is Ends And Means, but I will definitely be going back for more.

@stuartk

Lol,

Bombard away. You have given me hours of enjoyment. Oh, I haven’t received the second book yet, but @900 pages it should be a snap to read.😁

If Destiny IsYours, is Spiritual, then I’ve found religion.😁

Good stuff!

@acman3

You wouldn’t happen to know what album 1981 is on? I looked on Qobuz and Amazon Music and couldn’t find it.

Thanks.

@acman3

I bummed.  I bought a streamer so I wouldn’t keep buying CD’s, but “The Beliver” isn’t on Amazon Music or Qobuz.

Oh well.

Listening to Ronnie Bedford,   Just Friends.  Featuring Tommy Newsom, Bill Charlap, & Peter Huffaker.
