My father owns a pair of Dahlquist DQ30i's and they sound wonderful. I'd pick up a pair in an instant if I could find a set. While a tad sloppy in the bottom end they are a superb value for the $. They cast an incredibly wide and realistic sound stage with depth to kill for. I suppose that this effect can be attributed to the open baffle design of the tweeter & isolation of the mid cabinet. The IMHO DQ30i's are one of the few few speakers to ever seriously bridge the gap between Electrostatic and traditional dynamic 'cabinet' speakers.
NAD amplification - 200+ watts per speaker, bi-amped, Audioquest Indigo bi-wired cabling, cheap interconnects and an NAD multi-cdp source. This system is a real burner for the budget. It sounds sound rich and airy with a wonderful organic quality that's hard to duplicate - I've spent more than 6 times what this system cost & numerous hours on my own system and still can't reproduce some aspects of this combination. I've often wondered what the DQ30i's would sound like were they in my system with my gear.
As for the reference of Alon & Acarian Systems
Carl Marchisotto (founder of Acarian Systems Ltd.) was chief designer at Dahlquist back in the day of the DQ20 & DQ30i's. Carl appears to have carried on the basic design of the DQ30i with his Circe speaker. But 12k per pair of Circe's is a far cry from the $2.5k we paid for my Fathers DQ30i's back in 1991.
