Question on Tube Swapping and Biasing
Finally getting around to biasing my amp. But the more I read the more confusing it seems: The amp is supposed to be hooked up to speakers and on for an hour before biasing. However I’ve also read that you should discharge the electrical charge b...
Question on Tube Swapping and Biasing
Thanks all for the interesting discussion! I bought a multi meter and insulated screwdrivers, but am waiting to tweak the bias until after I return from a trip.  In the meantime, I've switched out the Luxman tube amp for a Benchmark AHB2 Power Am...
Question on Tube Swapping and Biasing
Thanks for all the info! @westcoastaudiophile what is "improved" about the Telefunken KT88? Have you tried them?
Question on Tube Swapping and Biasing
Thanks for your suggestions. Obviously there's a variety of opinions on how to approach this!  From a dealer / manufacturer point of view, they obviously want to err on the side of caution and recommend that you use a professional audio repair sh...
Question on Tube Swapping and Biasing
Great, thanks!
Question on Tube Swapping and Biasing
Thanks, super helpful response. I've unplugged the amp, and will wait until I have a multi-meter to check bias before I power it up again. From your advice it appears I can't really rely on a technician to do the bias check, as it really should be...
Sweet Sounding DAC
I like my Sparkler Audio DAC a lot. It's very small, sounds wonderful and very tubelike, but unfortunately costs less than $1,000 so well below your price range. Hope that's not a deal killer?
Streamer vs. new mac mini for 2 channel system
You might consider using both sources in your system. I also have a DAC with only one input, however the Inday Digital audio Switcher allows you to switch between 4 different digital sources. In my case the Mac Mini, a Node 2i, and Rega CD player.
I love sad music
If you like sad music, bordering on tragic, try Scarlatti's Il Primo Omicidio by Alte Musik and Renee Jacobs. "Duetto: La Fraterna Amica Pace" is sublime, as are the next few cuts.
Is Modern Jazz an Oxymoron?
Agree totally. I love bebop jazz, especially the 60's. Check out KSDS Jazz 88.3 from San Diego, they usually hit the sweet spot for old school jazz. Mike LeDonne is a great current practitioner. Also whoever Ron Carter and Tony Williams are playin...
BlueSound Stinks(!), anyone?
Just bought a Node 2i and, though I had some initial issues with accessing large files from my iMac system, am extremely happy with their customer service, which quickly resolved the problems. They were very professional, knowledgable and responsi...
A move from Harbeth to... Wilson?
At a dealer last year I auditioned Harbeth 30.1s versus a Wilson system set up in the next room. Don’t recall the particulars of the Wilson gear but the entire system cost over $1,000,000, while the Harbeth system was around $15,000. For me, I muc...
Non Analytical Sounding DAC Upgrade- Budget $1,500 or less
The Sparkler Audio S504 DAC has a great analogue sound. Had it over a year and highly recommend it. Also just got the RME ADI-2 for my other system and that sounds great so far as well.
Affordable cables
I bought a set of interconnects and speaker wires from Sparkler Audio of Japan, at the same time I got my DAC from them. All very high quality, hand made to order and very reasonably priced. My Harbeths sound great with them.
A DAC that can make digital sound analog?
One vote here for the Sparkler Audio model S504 "unison" ― 16 bit Non-Oversampling DAC. It sounds lovely.
