Your top 3 worst purchases ever
Marantz PM72 integrated, quite a few years back. defective all the way, output transistors blew a couple of times, bad phono stage too.
Another phono cartridge question
top of the line Nagaoka MP 500 sounds sweat and detailed.top of the line Audio Technica 150 MLX sounds crisp and clear.top of the line Goldring 1042 is an excellent all rounder.you could also throw in a JICO SAS stylus in a MM generator (vintage o...
Retip for zyx
you can get it retipped both in US (soundsmith) as in Europe(van den Hul, Goldring) to name a few.changing only the diamond tip will not change that much the initial character as changing the entire cantilever/ tip assembly, especially if you pick...
Recommend cartridge for JVC QL-Y66F
If you could find a JVC X1 or X2 that would make a perfect all JVC vintage set.Shure 97 xe and AT 150 are fine carts with the AT being way more detailed and extended top to bottom. Shure lacks in some detail but it is a highly musical cart and con...
Turntable with stable speed.
Im afraid Omsed is right. Optical speed control is a nice marketing theme but fails to give truly constant speed. It was an error of micro seiki too, continuous speed corrections created exactly the opposite effect of keeping the speed constant. a...
Turntable with stable speed.
I build TT's and own (or owned) just about every possible technology.A decent TT will measure wow/flutter of less than 0.08%, the smaller the better. 0.06 weighted is very good and below that excellent.I am afraid that truly excellent tables do no...
Turntable with stable speed.
this is not so simple.some (older) direct drives were constantly monitoring and adjusting the platter speed thus creating a pitch instability all the time. these models came even from companies like micro seiki. not to mention that some of the exc...
What should I upgrade next?
At the time B&W wanted to shift (rise) the price of the big 800 series and they managed to justify by building a new tweeter. (this gave a +50% price rise). I would keep the speakers, the diamond tweeter does not worth the difference.on the ot...
You know you're an audiophile if--
you cannot listen to your system off the sweet spot

Audiogon "RECORDINGS TO DIE FOR" list

ATC SCM11 vs Monitor Audio Gold Reference 60
ATC are amazing speakers but require Watts.. not so much current as they only drop at 6 Ohms minimum (which is rather high).the active solution is a very valid point as you will save your self time and money on matching.generally speaking ATC is a...
Amplifiers:A Keeper for Life. Do you know of one ?
ASR emitter amplifiers are keepers for life. built quality is beyond reproach, cost no object quality.Sound wise they are very balanced, never creating fatigue but with huge sound-stage and detail. they will match most speakers as their character ...
Question: Does ATC have the best midrange driver?
The ATC mid is fantastic. no doubt about it. what makes it sound so well is the fact that ATC crosses at 380/3500 Hz in all their models, meaning that the vast majority of musical information comes through a single, high quality driver.
Speakers to hang on to for LIFE
A vote for the ATC speakers. Many many years in the market have seen only slight changes in design philosophy. The famous custom build soft dome mid range still is among the best money can buy.
