I agree.
Where's Your Virtual System?
Wondering why so many members on Audiogon have not taken a few minutes to create their Vitual System and share some picutes with everyone. As a picture says a thousand words, I think we all enjoy seeing what other members are listening to and how they have the system set up. I for one have stolen a few ideas after seeing another members rig, wall treatments, the type of shelving etc...
I know we all have a camera in our phone and its as simple as putting a few picutes on your computer and then selecting the ones you want in the Virtual System set up menu...............😁
@czarivey So you'll be sending special glasses out to everyone? 😎 |
I've always felt that the Virtual Systems page is what makes Audiogon unique. In other forums there will be a dedicated thread with an endless scroll of members' systems. One of the cool things about Virtual Systems is that it allows you to favorite certain systems, which for me is the icing on the cake. Too many great systems on this site that could be lost in the shuffle without the favorite button. |

OP,
I agree! “Showcase” photos are not required. This is a bunch of guys into high end audio… virtually all our systems are “under construction”. This is not the Ladies Home Journal. It is so helpful to those receiving or giving advice.
If you ask a question, the answer is going to be a shot in the dark because half the time the answer might be the glass doors behind your speakers, when the question is about cables. Without knowing the whole picture and all the components, it is really hard.
From the other side, if you are giving advice… it helps provide a good idea where you are coming from. If I have a wall of speakers and subwoofers with a few thousand watts of amplification vs a carefully set up set of elegant stand mounted speakers with tube monoblocks… these are people with very different values. Really helps the people listening to you figure out where you are coming from.

That’s generally correct. 99% of the time. Where did I find that statistic? I made it up 😂😂. Just a general observation, subjective. But you get the gist.
I believe you. Dangerous dudes out there. So I get it. I often regret posting mine. But I can handle Cin Dyment. Bring it on. I know you are reading this.

+1 @ozzy I value responses from those folks who have experience with certain gear being discussed and can demonstrate them. I have observed that the science folks mostly never display their system. Maybe 1 in every 1000. But at least they should display measurements of their individual equipment 😁 |
There will always be a bias based on how much one spends on their system. More money spent = more knowledge. Inexpensive or modest system = less knowledge. I have a good friend who is a heritage Ferrari expert (international reputation) who has never owned a Ferrari. He often gets dismissed by naive Ferrari owners based on his lack of ownership and not based on his knowledge. |
I am very curious: is your friend a Ferrari expert based on driving, tweaking, fixing, hands-on experience with Ferrari vehicles, or simply based on the internet reading and researching about Ferrari? Serious question. I bet it’s the former.

dox
/däks/
verb
informal
verb: dox ... past participle: doxxed; gerund or present participle: doxxing
I am cleeds there, too. |
@thyname he was the former director of the Ferrari Heritage certification program in Maranello. |
I find the virtual systems very inspirational and a way to establish legit posters from blabbermouth posters. There are members running around here proclaiming they are brilliant, own speaker companies, are engineers, yak, yak, yak. When you ask about their system page they either go dark or tell you its a secret. What a bunch of pretenders with too much time on their hands, here to just troll and jerk everyone's chain. |
I have to agree that the virtual systems posted here peg the needle on the "awesome" scale -- both esthetically and functionally. By comparison, posting photos of my system would be the equivilent of crusing downtown Sturgis on a warm summer night -- riding a Vespa scooter. Keep those photos coming. You guys rock!! |
@waytoomuchstuff Funny on the ex comment. Reminds me of the time a saw a big flash Mercedes pass me on the highway. The woman driving had a vanity licence plate that read "WAS HIS" Ouch !!! 🤣 |
Finally I’ve put it up. For some reason I’d not noticed the virtual system feature for a long time and when it was mentioned earlier I got distracted before I could get it posted and then forgot about it. Mine is a bit unusual. You don’t normally see stacks of horn woofers mated to a tight array of 3 bookshelf speakers. It’s highly experimental and quite a bit incidental. I’m enjoying it quite a bit though! At some point I plan to experiment with using horns for the center 3 speakers. I’m not sure how that will work out though since the array seems to like to be pretty close spaced, so the horns can’t be too wide.

Posting our systems online certainly seems like vanity. The problem with that is no matter how grand your system is, someone else has a better one. So if vanity is your motive then prepare to be humiliated. I look at the virtual systems as a way to gain ideas on rooms, set ups and to see what gear the higher end crowd tend to use. It’s a learning tool for most all of us. We also get feedback from others that can be constructive. With brick and mortar stores so far and few in between, posted virtual systems is helpful and insightful. Besides, I have the best stereo system in my neighborhood and nobody cares. Actually, friends and family think it’s some kind of obsessive disorder and look at me with concern. You all are the only ones that understand me. |
Sad, isn’t it? 🤔 _ _ _ _ “I don’t want to belong to any club that will accept me as a member." Groucho Marx. Redux - Woody Allen. |
why? our virtual systems are mostly hidden or marginalized in our activity view. the benefit of posting your system is not that significant compared to how it could be. my system has been posted on Audiogon since 2004. ’Member’s Systems’ use to be mixed into the main page according to post sequence like other topics, which would cause much more activity on systems compared to now. right now you have to scroll all the way down to see any posts even if they just happened. so people just don’t notice system activity and it’s minimal. you rarely see any sustained activity on anyone’s system page. i wish it was still like it was before. if the community wants more members to post their systems, the system activity must be sequenced with other activity so the system posts get more attention, and are more important. then members will pay attention to their system pages. and make their pages better. it’s just that simple. don’t hide the members system posts at the bottom of the feed. it will be a better resource, and make Audiogon better. i have over 3400 posts and 12.5m visitors to my system page, but almost all of that was at least 10 years ago before they changed it. therefore i don’t update my system pictures and descriptions like i use to. i’ve made changes in the last 2 years that are not yet posted on my system page. still; it’s nice to have my system posted and i do appreciate it. |
@mikelavigne I have the same lamp over my TT as you do. That’s where the similarities end. I was able to amass a system, in 12 years that cost less than "regular" people here spend on cable upgrades annually. And that’s how far it goes, I had to promise to my wife that for the next 10 years I won’t spend any money on hifi stuff, by which time I could be dead. The only thing I have that most audiophiles don’t is taste. Many of you people have the ugliest furniture, rugs, wall colors around your 100K systems. Still, it’s fun to hang out here, but I don’t need to see virtual system pics, most of them only serve as an outlet for bragging. There are exceptions of course, or maybe the majority. Again, I don’t look at them. (and when I do, I am confused about your component list. Would it be hard to say what is what? You can just type "amplifier", "turntable", etc. after the brand and model name.) |
@asctim , LOL. 😄 Actually, I think it’s a Brother. I don’t use it very much....but every once in a while, I need it for work. |
After viewing @mikelavigne 's system for the first time, I wanted to take photos of my system and submit a case of vandalism to my insurance company. |
@mikelavigne What an interesting room and system. I would have to say looking at your set-up is akin to reading Architectural Digest. It's fun to look at a cost is no object house even when I know I will never live in one. I don't view my love of music to be a competition on who has a better set-up than the next guy. And that's why I started this thread encouraging more members to add their Virtual System. Looking at other's systems is both fun and educational. And for those who think it's just bragging, I would point out that no one is making you look. Thanks for sharing Mike. |
@grislybutter There are two ways to make a buiding look tall. One is to build a tall building and the other is to tear down all the buidings around it. |
thanks guys, for the kind comments. my system is a now "30 year effort".....’labor of love’....... adding a little each year, and i’ve extended my working life years beyond what it might have been without my system/music addiction. might finally retire in 3-4 months. i would like to see ’members systems’ in the regular feed so there would be more attention given to it. and then we could all see gear talked about in the context of particular systems, and not just ’al a carte’. i also found that the conflict and lack of respect on threads is greatly reduced when you are on someone’s personal system thread. it’s bad to sh*t where you e*t. even Neanderthals clean up their act when they go to someone else's house. |
The only thing I have that most audiophiles don’t is taste. Many of you people have the ugliest furniture, rugs, wall colors around your 100K systems. I love your observation and it had me laughing, nice!🤣 After viewing @mikelavigne 's system for the first time, I wanted to take photos of my system and submit a case of vandalism to my insurance company. 🤣🤣🤣

@bigtwin I might be selling something today that served as a spacious "treehouse" for my cats in the garage for a few grand. Then I will look for the courage to tell my wife: here is half you, spend it however you want and I will spend the other half on stereo stuff. (I probably won't) Feels like hifi and marriages are more complex than the peace in the Middle East |
@grislybutter Reminds me of the story of a man who asked his wife "what would you say if I told you I won on the lottery?" His wife replied "I'd say give me my half and I'm out of here". to which the man replied "it's a deal. Here's your $12.50. Now pack your bags and get out" 🤣 |
