Classical music for Rockers
Based on some of the more recent threads here on Audiogon, I have been meaning to put together a classical music for Rockers list. So below are my recommendations, for rockers, for those pieces mentioned in this thread. Many of these pieces have b...
Mozart Piano Concerto 21.
The Bilson "original instrument performance on Archive is excellent. I have his whole set and it is a must listen for anyone interested in Mozart.
What is the sweetest sounding tube amp.
Take a listen to the Antique Sound Labs 1006 845 based SET, 22 watts. I'm using them in my office rig.
Debussy's Opera, Pelleas et Melisande
The Desormiere has been the standard to beat with the first (early 50's) Ansermet (LP Only as far as I can tell) and Ingelbrecht as the only close contenders. I enjoyed the Karajan but it really isn't in the same league.A friend of mine, who is a ...

How do you find BEST classical recordings???
Another resource to check out is Andante.com. The have a huge reference base of info about classical music including program notes for most standard pieces, a comprehensive timeline, composer profiles, the short Grove Dictionary of music and much ...
How do you find BEST classical recordings???
My wife and I are serious classical music nuts, with well over 10,000 items in our collection and a custom database cross-linked to published reviews to keep track of it all. We’ve studied musicology and published quite a few classical reviews. Th...
System Reference Recordings
I happen to like Reference Recordings to test equipment. In particular the Dukas Sorcerer's Apprentence. Most systems can't clearly seperate the Contra Bassoon and Bass Drum when they double each other solo. But for Classical CD's But Not RR:Barto...
"period interpretation" beethoven?
The Harnoncourt Beethoven with the COE from around 1990 is worth a owning, unlike most "period" Beethoven interpretations (and I like period playing, especially for Haydn).RE Furwangler 5th. The 1943 is excellent. I slightly prefer the 1937. There...
Slight cracle from one channel of Jolida SJ302a
I own several Jolida's. When you change the tubes try cleaning the tube sockets with some good contact cleaner. I've had crackling show up on retubing and cleaning the sockets fixed it.
high-end vs. ultra high-end amplifiers
About two years ago I managed to compare about a dozen amps in the $10k to $30K (new). They all sounded good. They all sounded different, some very different. Fortunately, my wife, who is as golden an ear as I've met and very picky about the sonic...
"period interpretation" beethoven?
I would generally agree with Jhold on period practice, although for a majestic 9th I would reccomend Furwanglers Bayreuth perfomance. The strange thing about the fast tempo period conductors is that the 1930's performances by Toscanini are the clo...
Perfect sound forever ? Not even when new...
I've regularly noticed artifacts that sound like a cross between a click and a thump on DDD classical CD's. Teldec CD's come to mind. Since these have all seemed to occur at likely edit points, I have assumed that they are from the editing process...
TACT digital corrections preamps?
My experience matches Drubin's comments re the Tact. When I posted my experiences comparing Tact and Sigtech about 18 months ago, most other posters disagreed with my criticisms of the Tact so take your pick. I returned the Tact and kept my SigTec...
What is a good intro to "Mahler"?
Perhaps you should rethink your position re the music. My CD and my vinyl rigs are both into the five figures and I have many analog-CD duplicates so I think I have a least a basis for my comments. The difference in sound between CD and analog is ...
