Speaker that are 'KEEPERS" for the long haul!!!
Choice of a long-term speaker depends on what limitations you are willing to accept. For me the choice was easy. Quad ESL (the originals). Bought them as a "kit" (frame, transformers and new panels which had to be soldered together) from Q Audio ...
What speaker – under $10k – has the best timbre and tonal qualities?
Second vote for Quad ESL-57s. I grew up playing first the violin (badly), then the piano (less badly), so have some notion of live instrument sound. First time I heard the Quads, in college in the late 60's, I was blown away by its reproduction of...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Just a quick comment on cartridge output specifications. They are commonly listed for either 5 cm/sec peak or 3.54 cm/sec RMS at 1 kHz, but the number should be the same, because a sine wave with an RMS value of 3.54 cm/sec has a peak value of 5 c...
Building high-end 'tables cheap at Home Despot II
So Jean, you're not going to give us the weight? You could at least give us a hint, like calling it the "39 cent" mod, or something like that, in line with the original "cheap" ethos of the original thread.
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Lewm,For a triode the input capacitance is the capacitance of the grid to plate, which is typically a few pf, MULTIPLIED by the gain of the triode stage (actually gain +1) - this is the Miller effect. For a 12AX7 tube the grid to plate capacitance...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Hxt1.You should try your MMs again with a lower capacitance or no added capacitance at all. Most MMs do not need 300-350 pf and sound better w/ lower capacitance. Too high a capacitance can cause roll-off in the high frequencies, which can lead to...
Why is the price of new tonearms so high
Let me stick my oar into this old debate - Mark Kelly is exactly correct and Dertonarm is completely off base in his comment that " the inertia in a say 15 grams effective mass 12" tonearm with a given cartridge is always larger then in a 15 grams...
What would you chose? VPI MKIII vs. Linn LP-12
I had a VPI HW-19 Mk II with Rega RB-300 and still have a Linn LP-12 with Origin Live modded RB-250. The VPI seemed to have deeper bass but the Linn seemed to sound more up-beat with more pace. They're both good turntables but they do sound differ...
effective mass ???
The Grace 940 is an S-shaped tonearm with an effective length of 237 mm according to the specifications. If you look at the effective mass of several similar tonearms from the era (SME 3009 II, Micro-Seiki MA-505, Fidelity Research FR-64fX) they a...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Raul,Besides the problem you mentioned with integrated headshells, many tonearms with detachable headshells have the wrong offset angle for optimum (Baerwald) alignment. With a separate headshell you can twist the cartridge to improve the alignmen...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Dgob,Don't have any tips for set-up of the MMC-2, however, it is a rather high compliance cartridge, so a lightweight headshell would probably work better rather than the heavyweight you are planning to use.
SP10 Mk II vs Mk III
One substitution you could consider for all those 1 uf 50 volt electrolytics are the Panasonic V series stacked metallized film caps sold by Digi-Key (part no. P4675-ND). These are very compact, low dissipation factor, non-inductive construction, ...
Linn vs VPI?
I had both a VPI HW-19 Mk II with acrylic arm board and a Linn LP-12 Valhala. The sonic differences between them, using an Origin Live RB-300, was that the VPI seemed to have deeper bass, which at times seemed a bit slow and turgid by comparison, ...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Raul,Actually ruby and sapphire are the same substance (aluminum oxide or corundum), the only difference is the color which is caused by impurities. If there is a difference because of the cantilever it probably isn't the material but perhaps the ...
Advice Needed on Mono Phono Preamps
Another mono preamp that is currently available is the TDL Technology 4010, which was recently reviewed in AudioXpress April 2009, and goes for a very reasonable price.
