need help with Conrad Johnson preamp SNAFI
When I spoke to a dude from CJ on the phone, he seemed pretty confident it was a power supply issue in the power amp. So I'll send along to Bill Thalmann at Music Technology, since he struck me as a great guy on the phone and his reputation couldn...
need help with Conrad Johnson preamp SNAFI
Thanks for notes. I did try to rebias. No improvement. All works fine with different preamp. The noise emitted when the cj preamp is plugged in is not affected by volume control. So that's perhaps a sign of line stage power issues?
seeking compatible amp/ CJ pv10, Vienna Acoustic
Thanks for asking. As for the initial brute matter of needing more "juice" to push the speakers and make them sing, I can safely say that the 70 watt CJ tube power amp goes further than the 75 SS Linn amp. So that's a big dumb thumbs-up. As for the...
seeking compatible amp/ CJ pv10, Vienna Acoustic
I am the OP? Just bought a used conrad Johnson premier eleven here on the 'gon. Seemed a decent price at $1650. Got tired of waiting for a cj mf2500a and figured for near the same price I could get 70 watts of tube power from a classic piece. Now ...
seeking compatible amp/ CJ pv10, Vienna Acoustic
Thank you for these responses. Such a great knowledge base here!So I've added some new names to my list of used power amps to look for in the under $3000 range that may synergize nicely with Mozart Grand speakers, CJ pv10 amp, Rega TT, and acousti...
suggest an under $2000 amp to match 4ohm speakers
Thanks for tip so far! I'm hoping this thread will be useful to other future readers as well.
suggest an under $2000 amp to match 4ohm speakers
Thanks for all the suggestions so far--including the welcome suggestion of doing nothing. That suggestion reminds me of Basho (always a good thing):"Exhausted, I soughta country inn, but foundwisteria in bloom."Otherwise, yes Prima Luna comes up a...
for Bill Evans fan
I've noticed that the Riversides (Waltz; Vanguard, esp.) seem to be preferred to the Verve or Fantasy eras here. I'm curious how widespread these preferences are among the legions of BE fans.
need advice for budget preamp for Rega p3-24...
After five months of use, the Cambridge Audio 640p I bought used on the 'gon DIED. It was used, so no warranty. Ugh.Who repairs these things at good rate? I opened it up and nothing looked obviously bad, loose, or scorched. Power supply worked fin...
Connecting an REL sub to a Linn Classik
Thanks for your thoughtful advice. The problem with the Neutrik speakon and Linn Classik K is that the speaker terminals on Classik are not exposed but totally encased in plastic rods: you have to use special Linn connectors on your speaker cables...
Connecting an REL sub to a Linn Classik
This question is vexing me as well. I have a Linn Classik K (with the funny Euro plugs) and want to add a REL subwoofer (t-series) but the Linn plugs are not compatible with the REL wires: these plastic plugs will not allow sharing the Neutrik jac...
Best phono box for Rega P3-24TT/ Dynavector MC
Related situation. I too have a Rega p3-24, but with Elys 2 cartridge, with Cambridge 640p phono preamp, into Linn Classik amp. Am thinking of upgrading phono preamp, perhaps from SS to tube and one level up in sound quality, but with budget $200-...
Share thoughts on Keith Jarrett
I think the connection from Jarrett to Kikuchi is a fecund one, especially as they both record (sometimes) with Gary Peacock and Paul Motian (what a bass/drums genius duo there!). Kikuchi does sometimes moan and whine, in the tradition. Jarrett di...

Great post, Frogman. Good reading! The poignancy of Bill Evans' best recordings, combined with the outrageous virtuosity of his harmonic reworkings of materials, and his famous touch, plus his compositions, far outdistance Jarrett for me too. That ...

Oh and I neglected to mention Paul Bley above. I was just listening to him today and thought, wow, now there's someone who really pared back the pianistic language and led to a post-Ornette highly melodic, less chordal style.
