Have I forgotten what music sounds like?
I'm not familiar with the ML speakers. If they have cone bass speakers, you might want to check to see if they are blown by turning off the amps and then gently pressing the bass speakers back with your fingers placed around the diaphram -- i.e., ...
How many components to attach to one outlet?
You are correct that you can introduce noise back in. Generally, you would like to separate digital from other equipment. With only one outlet, I'd suggest plugging your preamp and amp into it (along with your fm tuner if you have one). Keep the d...
New law forbidding the sale of used gear Japan
Have safety standards improved that much over the last five years? I don't think so. What an interesting excuse to eliminate competition for new gear. I hope it doesn't catch on in other countries!
Do tubes have a break in period?
From my limited experience, I've found that they have a relatively short break-in period -- a day or two max. I did not, however, conduct listening tests for high output tubes but don't suspect it's too much different.
What is an Audiophile?
Tireguy, I'd revise that a bit to say "someone who enjoys music but is driven mad by continually perceived shortcomings of the reproduction of it". I'd argue that most audiophiles love music but are hounded by the imperfections of their, or anyone...
VINCE YOUNG On hi def?
It was a great match up and Vince was fun to watch. If his receivers had better hands, he might not have had to run as much -- he's a pretty good passer so that should earn his way into the NFL even if running won't work in the big leagues.By the ...
Sources for Independent artists music
Wow! I just found it and did a search before posting. This is just plain fun to browse -- don't you love the music selections by mood (e.g., to cook dinner by or to drink alone by)? Fantastic.
Why is there no Mid End
Actually, a few more words... On reflection, you can define mid end as whatever is in the middle, regardless of how good the middle becomes over time. If you subscribe to this approach, the majority of equipement is always mid to low end by defini...
Why is there no Mid End
Plato, one word: Grooaan ;-)
Happy New Year fellow Audiophiles
Thanks Jasman. Happy New Year everyone! May all of you have a great year and enjoy what you have and ignore what you don't ;-)
Why is there no Mid End
For some reason, manufacturers choose not to advertise their wares as mid fi or low fi. In truth, the borders between hi, mid an low are tough to nail down. Is class B or C per Stereophile mid fi? Is everything sold at Circuit City low fi? To a tu...
The black hole of component repair?
Leedistad, apparently, things last a lot longer when they're seldom used. I wonder why married men would ever need Viagra?
room size
Tom, the smaller room is actually pretty good -- better in some ways than the larger room. You can expect some exaggerated bass at about 70 Hz, 145 Hz and 225 Hz. Apart from that, just be sure to get speakers that roll off quickly by 25 Hz -- you ...
Cary 303-300
Sasonmusic, it's a lovely unit even in solid state mode. However, and sorry about this, please do use other tubes. Don't go nuts on rolling. The RCA Cleartops are pretty cheap and readily available and will do wonders for the tube output sound. It...
room size
Donniebaker, few rooms are too small so long as you match the gear with the room and have the right acoustic treatments. Of course, the smaller the room, the less realistic bass you'll get. A few questions:1) Are you actually making the room small...
