Poor sound from rental Blu-Ray discs
Thanks for all the responses. I would like to narrow down my question to the following: does anyone watch Blu-Ray discs with the audio going through digital coaxial (not HDMI, not multi-analog) into the pre-pro or receiver, and if so, are you hear...

Are Dipole Surrounds Suitable To Be Used As Fronts
If you already own a pair of dipole surrounds, there would be no harm in doing the experiment, but I predict that dipole surrounds will not perform very well as front main speakers.1) In general, they are lower quality design and construction than...
choosing a center channel
Hmmm. I assume you've ruled out some of the obvious things, like speaker wire reversal, a blown driver, or an incorrect setting or malfunction with your AV receiver or surround processor. Have you tried manually increasing the center channel level...

Jimmy, what don't you like about your B&W LCR60?
Help in building a KEF surround system
Are you planning to use this system mostly for home theater use (movies), or mostly for multichannel music (SACD or DVD-A)?Assuming the former, I think KEF 104.2's would be gross overkill as side/rear surround speakers, and they may actually be po...
Can you help me select a pre/pro?
So, to clarify, you want to be able to convert 5.1 to 2.0, and have the LFE information sent to the main speakers? If so, then here are my comments:1) I am not sure that my pre-pro (Sherwood-Newcastle P-965) will do this, but it might, if the multi...
Processor Help...Please
I think this post belongs in the "Home Theater" section, not the "Speakers" section.Anyway, if I were shopping for a pre-pro that supports HDMI 1.3 and the new lossless surround formats, I would take a good listen to the new Outlaw 997:http://www....
Can you help me select a pre/pro?
In my previous post, please correct "Dolby ES" to "Dolby EX" and "DTS Discrete" to "DTS ES."
Can you help me select a pre/pro?
Not sure what you mean by 5.1 downmix option. Dolby Digital and DTS on standard DVDs are 5.1. Dolby ES and DTS Discrete are 6.1, but if you only want to use 5 speakers plus the subwoofer, no problem -- just leave one of the rear channels unconnect...
Home theater crossover question
I looked at the specs for the Infinity TSS-1100 satellite/subwoofer system, and now I do agree with Kal. Leave the crossover for the front left and right speakers at 200 Hz, if that is what the receiver selected in the auto-configuration. The twin...
Home theater crossover question
Kal says "all's well" and Kal knows what he is talking about, but I disagree with him anyway. If your subwoofer puts out anything much higher than 80 Hz, then it will be localizable. In other words, you will be able to hear it thumping away in the...
Backup battery UPS for my system...
I use a Cyberpower UPS, made for computers and purchased 6 years ago for under $100. I had to replace the lead acid battery once 2 years ago for $35. I use it mainly to protect the DSP-based pre-pro from voltage dips caused by my amps turning on. ...
Sub DIY vs mass produced?
If the receiver has a subwoofer output (RCA out) then you already have a built-in crossover and don't to need to buy another -- unless you are not satisfied with the sound quality, and want to move up to a newer preamp-processor. Anything (receive...
Are lossless Codec's worth upgrading my processor
Kennyt,Are you an audio dealer or manufacturer? You seem eager to get our friend Ghstudio into some new gear. :)I admit, I have not heard the new formats, but it is hard to imagine how a movie's soundtrack could be improved much beyond DTS or Dolb...
