Unusual TAS bomb
Well, in an at least modest defense of the TAS writers.... I write record reviews for All About Jazz, and believe me, by the time you've done fifty of them its really easy to run out of adjectives. It's hard *not* to be formulaic.
Great single ended CD/SACD
Anyone have any favorite single-ended players?
Ground Cheater plug or....
I didn't check the cord, but I did switch out my aftermarket PCs with the factory stock, in various combinations, and the hum remained.
Character of EL-84 amps
I think the Manley Snapper is EL 84 based also. Another nice thing about the EL84 is that great vintage tubes are generally a heck of a lot cheaper than bigger vintage power tubes like the 6550, KT88 and EL34s which can be several hundred dollars ...
HUM - you can catch fish in a dingy too.
Well again, the power supply - a PS Audio something-or-other - is still grounded. The cheater is between the preamp and the power supply, and the power supply still has a protection circuit, so I think the risk is pretty low. The amp, which is the...

So here's what fixed it. I switched pre-amps, and suddenly the amp was quiet, but when I turned on the pre-amp the hum came back. It had mysteriously jumped between components! To finally get it to settle down, I stuck a cheater plug between the p...
amp upgrade
I would even look at the Atlas. It's even cheaper than the 90, and the Magnum upgrade gets you 90 watts per channel. It doesn't list it on Rogues website, but I believe it can be factory fitted with the new KT120 tubes, which are supposed to be ex...
amp upgrade
I used to have a 1070. The Bryston would be a step up, but that doesn't sound like where you want to go. Since you've already got the Rogue 99 preamp, have you considered looking at the Rogue amps? They seem to offer good power/price performance a...
Table radio options for kids room
Just to follow up - I wound up getting the Tivoli Music System. For what we're looking for its actually quite good. It's a little rolled off in the highs, but it has good clarity and doesn't have any obvious rough spots. The CD loaded fine. It see...

In addition, I figured out which circuit the hi-fi is on, turned everything else in the house off, as well as unplugging everything else in the room, and the amp still hummed.I also used a ground tester and the outlets were showing that they were ...
Ground Cheater plug or....
The plot thickens. I took the amp to a local tech who a) could not duplicate the hum and b) could not find anything wrong with the amp - although he did say it sounded very nice. Not quite believing it, I went and listened for myself, and he was r...
Expensive Condo - Expensive Audio
to answer your question, yes, it appears they are Goldmunds of some sort.
Help me recommend some speakers for a friend
Spendor s8e. Moderately sized floor stander - great value used. Terrific w/ 50 watts of tube juice.
Ground Cheater plug or....
speakers are 89db Spendor S8e. I can only hear the hum from the listening position if there is no ambient noise - i.e. the fridge is not cycling - or if I'm standing right next to them, but not when music is playing. I sent the amp in for service ...
