best used amp around $2000 for B&W N802s
I'm very happy with my Classe CA-200 (newer model, same guts as CA-201). Used is about $1500, perhaps a bit more.Despite the name (pronounced "Class A"), I don't believe these are "pure" Class A amps. They are massive and heavy, and they do produc...
Why are audiophiles perceived as being wackos?
One point I would make is that at least in my middle-class world, it is a mistake to think that most people have *any* hobby comparable to being an audiophile. Most people I know don't collect wine or watches or anything of the sort. They are busy...
Full-range vs Hybrid
There are some excellent threads on this topic already. I believe Duke (audiokinesis) is involved in many of them. I suggest you search on "sound labs" in the forums and see what you find, as their speakers are mentioned in most/all of these threa...
Rotel RB 1070 bridged/ RB 1090
I went from a Rotel 135WPC amp to a Classe CA-200 (one of the newer ones, same guts as the CA-201) and was thrilled at the upgrade. Cost was about $1500 used. List about $3000. These puppies are heavy, though, I'm amazed mine didn't get damaged in...
Best bargain integrated amp?
Hi Catt3,Could you say a bit more about what you do and don't like about your current amp? Is it lacking in bass (I found the Cambridge gear bright for my taste)? In my experience, more money does buy a nicer integrated. Consider, for example, a us...
Lucinda Williams Fans?
Saw Lucinda Williams Sept 12, 2001, the day after 9/11. I'd been listening to her albums for a couple of years. The thing that impressed me about the show is how hard she rocks! Two guitars and wall of sound. She was not at all reticent, talked ab...
Other Hobbies?
Hi sailplaners,Shventus, by "discus-type" I think Champtree means the new hand-launch gliders that you launch with a discus-throwing motion. Not the sailplane of the same name! For me, I have flown for some years a lowly MAD Highlander (2-meter foa...
Rotel RA 972 or NAD 320BEE
Viridian hit it right on the head. I also prefer the Rotel, but expect that you may prefer the NAD. I find the latter sounds muddy to me, but that is the "warmth" that some people like. There is a noticeable difference, and it's a matter of taste....
Hum in my reciever from PC
Many people here recommend the use of an external DAC. This can be achieved if you have a digital out on your sound card (many have this), or via a USB-attached DAC. I will leave it to others who have done it to comment further.- Eric
Do you remember your first cd?
Stop Making Sense by the Talking Heads. It was around 1984. I was living in Boston, working for minimum wage at a left-wing printshop. I had seen the movie with a girlfriend, and was blown away. About that time my roommate bought a stereo with a s...
Other Hobbies?
I fly a radio-controlled sailplane -- still working on getting my first electric in the air so I can fly at smaller fields! That and my family is all I can (barely) squeeze in.
Are Rotel amps and preamps any good?
My first "audiophile" purchase was a Rotel pre-amp/amp pair. I exchanged the pre-amp within a week or two for a more expensive Classe unit, but lived with the amp for a couple of years. I still have it in my second system. In short, I think their a...
Best budget universal CD/DVD player?

Speaker cable vs. interconnect cable length
I recently went through this same debate, and went with 40' balanced interconnects. I was nervous when I fired it up, as I had a fair amount of time in running the wire and terminating the ends. The good news is that it sounds great, not noticeabl...
Computer as remote "CD player"
Great information, thanks. I am working to absorb it.JKRING, the squeezebox looks great. Two more questions: 1. Is it possible to request an album or tune by ID number, rather than by browsing? 2. Is it possible to "force" music to the squeezebox ...
